From Sky Sports:
"I have been a coach and a manager for 30 years," Eriksson explained. "You talk to the doctor and physio but, when you see people train, you can see when they are ready to play in a match.
"We didn't want to play him in the first game, but we were sure he would be on the pitch in the second match.
"He was a bit short of training and I did not want to risk it but we thought for three or four days it would not be a risk to let him play."
Independent medical experts passed Rooney fit before the game, a fact which strengthened Eriksson's resolve and placated some of United's fears.
"We were convinced that we were right. After a lot of discussions in which I was involved and above my head they decided and I was extremely thankful," Eriksson added.
"Thank you to Manchester United. They knew everything. Here we are with Rooney on the pitch. Perfect.
"It's good for the team and it's good for the England fans."
