Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed goalkeeper Ben Foster as a future England number one.

Foster is currently on Manchester United's tour of South Africa, but he is not expected to be at Old Trafford next season.

The 23-year-old is expected to be back at Watford on a season-long loan as he did last term following his move to United from Stoke City.

But Ferguson has revealed his fondness for Foster - who looks to have a big future at United ahead of him

"All the material is there," said Ferguson.

"He had a couple of tests yesterday but he coped with them very well.

"His handling is very good and he is a fantastic kicker of the ball. He can get the ball from a defensive position to behind your opponents' last line of defence very easily.

"He is quick across his area and has a great physique. All he needs now is experience."

Ferguson has already allowed Tim Howard to join Everton, and Foster is set to leave also - but the United chief needs another goalkeeper to compete with number one Edwin van der Sar.

West Brom's Tomasz Kusczak is Ferguson's number one choice to come in and talks continue over his move from The Hawthorns.

Foster himself is keen to make the move back to Watford - who he helped into The Premiership.

"Staying at United would be okay, but I'd love to be at Watford," he said.

"The chance to play in The Premiership week in, week out is everything to a young footballer.

"I love everything about the club - the players, the staff, the manager. It is a very professional set-up and I want to be part of it."

I reckon Fergie is right, Foster is def the man for the future. For United and England.

Foster is excellent and I want to know the odds on him being England's number one in South Africa 2010. I'd put a tenner on it, Lol!

I think going back to Watford can be great for him, similar with Howard at Everton, two young keepers getting 1st team experience in the premiership from United, looks like Fergie is finally getting it sorted at the back.

Will be great to have to young keepers playing premiership football week in week out, great for their future, its why we will sign Kuszcack, he will be number 2 this season, with perhaps a similar setup next season then perhaps having him or Foster as number one, it will be interesting to see how Foster does this season, if he has a great season, competing against the big boys, then a season perhaps as our number two OR even being deemed ready for first team football

Think another season playing for Watford in the prem will do him a world of good and could end up our no 1.

Doubt it. Kusczak, Foster and Howard will be our three 'keepers when VDS retires.

VDS got another one year extension though... I think Fergie is looking to keep hold of him for as long as possible. Howard would surely look elsewhere rather than try compete with three other keepers

Hold on! Robinson wouldn't be number 1 if there were any other decent keepers in the prem. If that cowboy from Maine Road is number 2, it doesn't say much. Even allowing that ,Casillas excepted, most keepers are geriatrics compared with the rest of the team, I think one good season at Watford and he could be our number 1 quicker than we think and then it will be England time!!!

yeh, but robinson aint a bad keeper, we tried signing him a few years back,......i was there at his first ever game in the premeirship, it was agaisnt us, he came on for the injured nigel martin, we won 3-2, but it wouldve been 8-2 without him

robinson isnt a great keeper but he's the best england have got.
if utd were trying to sign him i would be disappointed

I hope Fergie's right. It would be nice to have a solid keeper. No disrespect to VDS, but he's becoming an old man now, and I'd like United to have a good few years of security.

yeah it would be great to have englands number 1 as our keeper for the next decade, lets hope he continues his progression from last season and has a blinder in the prem this year particularly against chelski, pool and le arse taking a few points off them and showing them what he's going to do them for the next ten years, heres hoping anyway.
