I rate this lad, this is interesting! astonvilla.biz/content/view/1073/70/Former Finance Director Mark Ansell made the statement that Aston Villa were a selling club and if rumours are to be believed we'll find out fairly soon how true that statement was. According to the Sunday Mirror Manchester United are going to make an approach for Steven Davis. If this is true Doug Ellis has a big problem. The chairman came out last week saying the club needed to generate £60,000,000 a year to break even and someone else also reported that season ticket sales are down nearly 40%. If both statements are true then Villa are going to need to sell not just to buy but also to break even. The big problem for Ellis is can he sell a prized asset? Davis has come through the academy system, apparently set up by Ellis and is now starting to deliver consistent results. We all know what a good academy system can produce just by looking at the likes of Liverpool, United and Arsenal; selling what is developed would surely be the wrong decision if we wanted to keep the last glimmer of hope that we are ever to be a big club again or challenge for trophies?

Steven Davis would be a great coup but not as our main central midfielder as a back up to our first XI.

I think Davis can be the man who replaces Scholes, I think we will buy an attacking midfield player as well as Diarra whether it's davis or not I'm not sure.
However over the past couple of seasons we have sold Djemba P Neville Kleberson and Keane has left we haven't really bought any replacements and it looks as if Miller isn't seen as an option.

He is good, but not in anyway good enough to replace Scholesy. Ribery or Kerlon to replace Scholesy, or even Reo Coker.

I think you will eat your words on Davis, the Souza story was just that apparently and I'm not convinced overy Ribery - I've never seen him play inside.
Reo-coker is an interesting prospect I will agree with you on that one.

I know Kerlon was media speculation but Fergie will be aware of his talents from his latest scouting trips in Brazil. Ribery is a wide player, but does come inside a lot. With Ji-Sung, Richardson & Ronaldo in this side if he come to United he would be able to come inside and play his stuff, after all he has been touted as Zidane's replacement in the France squad.

Have you ever seen Souza play a full 90 mins? I haven't all I've seen is the odd clip which doesn't have any genuine bearing on his ability.
And I haven't seen Ribery in the centre role so I cannot comment, all I seen is he can beat players, not whether he can control a game from the middle and dictate the game and cope with the defensive duties.
I've seen Davis on a few occassions both live and on TV, he is very much like Scholes a busy player works hard reads the game well a great shot and the ability to score goals from midfield pretty regular. He scored 8 for a poor team such as Villa and has only just turned 21 this season.

If we are going to get an English I reckon we should get Reo-Coker. He has already shown he can compete with the best - held his own against Liverpool in the FA Cup Final - and is also a natural leader - West Ham captain at only 21. I think he is the most likely player to be able to replace Keane or Scholes.

Instead of buying Davis why don't we just give D. Jones more first team action . It would save us 5-6 million that we could use elsewhere on a more established already world class mid-fielder.

I'm certain Jones will be given a chance, I've watched him all through his youth and reserve career and I'm very surprised he hasn't already been given the opportunity of an extendede run.
however while I rate him highly I have to wonder does Fergie we have had major midfield problems with Fergie trying hard to buy someone in Jan but still refused the opportunity to bring back Dave Jones instead he brought back Richie who isn't half the player Dave is to my thinking.
And I doubt very much it was because Fergie wanted to give Jones the experience, as he was really needed at OT which is priority number one!

D.Jones is as good as Davis and will become better. I've seen Kerlon a couple of times for a full 90 mins in the U19 World Championships for Brazil and he was the outstanding player of the whole tournament. Skill, pace, intelligence and he does track back sometimes, but he needs to build on his strength becasue he is easily pushed off the ball, that's the very few times the defender catches him though.

I don’t like Stephen Davis; he isn’t united material, surely? Although some might argue that if Fletcher is, then Davis is. Either way, we need to be looking to bring in better players than that if we’re going to push Chelsea all the way next season.

Firstly, Davis reminds me a lot of Liam Miller, supposedly big talent who can do well at United, then comes here and shows no promise, not entirely sure what will happen to him but he still has a contract with United. Secondly as its already been mentioned, Reo-coker could be a much better signing, although they play in much different ways, and i'm sure the prices would be different too.
What would be much better though would be to wait at least another season, give Jones the chances he deserves and if he doesn't work out then he's gone, and one of these lads or a more proven player can come in.

Se7en don't sully an otherwise interesting thread with your Darren Fletchery! Shame on you!
Davis would be an ok signing but I agree about giving our youth teamers a chance first, more first team football wouldn't hurt the lad if we give our youths a chance and go for him next year
