Steve Staunton suffered his first defeat in charge of Republic of Ireland after they went down 1-0 to Chile at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday night.Manuel Iturra's first goal for his country was enough to give Chile a deserved win against a lacklustre Irish side. The defeat was not the best way for Staunton to prepare for their Euro 2008 qualifier with Germany in September, with just one more friendly before the campaign gets under way. Chile started the brighter of the two sides and they were almost gifted the lead after just seven minutes after a dreadful mistake by debutant Stephen Kelly. Kelly's poor back pass fell straight to Chile forward Reinaldo Navia right in front of goal, but after rounding Shay Given, he found the angle too tight and could only fire his shot wide of the open goal. Robbie Keane wasted a good opening three minutes later when he latched onto Kevin Doyle's flick on, but the Tottenham Hotspur ace got his attempted chip all wrong, hitting it harmlessly into the arms of Claudio Bravo. Gonzalez, Loserpool's player looked pretty good on the left wing. Player called Jimenez though, who we were linked to some time ago was the best player on the pitch.

After a comfortable victory over Sweden I thought they would of banged atleast 3 past Chile As an Irish fan, i thought we would have won the game, especially at Lansdowne Road, but not to be. I thought we were pretty lacklustre and didn't really get going. This was Steve Staunton's second game in charge after we beat Sweden 3-0 in his first game as manager. When Staunton was first appointed, a lot of Irish fans were worried due to his young age (he's only 37 which is young in international football terms) and also his lack of experience. Although the FAI did bring in Bobby Robson as Irish international team advisor. We think that it's still too early to judge him after two games, but we still think that we'll be ready come the Euro Championship Qualifiers.

Being Irish it was a horrible game to watch....painfull even.
We looked awkward and kept giving the ball away, youd swear it was lashing rain out the players looked that bad at controlling the ball.
It was only a friendly though so i can survive but if we dont pick it up we can say goodbye to the euro's aswell i reckon.
Could someone please tell me though why the hell we are still playing Gary Breen and Ian Harte?god they are awfull!
