Women's football is only big in America because they don't have women's 'american football', so the women's main sport there is football.

The World Series in baseball has always been a misnomer; even if you mean the "world" as the baseball world it's still not accurate because other nations play baseball. This year there was the World Baseball Classic which was much more interesting as 16 other nations played and in essence was the world cup of baseball. Guess who won? Japan...lol. The US was almost knocked out early on...so much for the illusion of US dominance in baseball..lol.

Let´s not lose sight that the Americans were in the Quarter finals in Korea and Japan, losing to the boring fuck Germans 1 - nil, and arguably outplayed them. They´ll field a better side this year as well. And we´re seing more and more internationals every year doing a decent job. Where´s the the love for tourrette Timmy?
Does the bloke who feels sorry about the yanks calling it "soccer" also feel sorry for the Italians who call it "Calcio", and not some derivative of "football" like almost every other nation. Youth soccer in America is huge, but what sadly lacks are coaches who who really know the game, and the exposure of it on a massive, top rate visual scale, i.e. TV, so that they can deeply know the nuances of the greatest sport. They also need more international club side play, such as fielding sides in South America´s version of the Champion´s League, the Copa de Libretadores. The national side needs to compete in more tourneys, also. A few years back, the Yanks wetre competeing in the South American Cup, and were far from embarrassing themselves. On the contrary, they showed a somewhat exciting, although a bit sloppy, offensive football. Far more enjoyable to watch then the football this Mr. Burns cunt displays for the English side. Don´t know why they´ve stopped competeing. A shame, really.
The MSL is improving, but remains more of a second division sort of football - lots of running and effort, yet mistake prone.
The hardest part for them though, is the competition with the other massive sports, especially American Football. Baseball, Basketball and Hockey are huge as well, and becoming quite big on an international scale. Those who critisize the yanks for their supposedly low level of soccer, should also look at the English in their basic total absence in the world of Baseball, Basketball and Hockey. Also, soccer remains a suburban white boy dominated sport. Once the minorities of the inner city get caught up on it, who knows how far they´ll go.
The yanks have also qualified for every World Cup since 1990. Not even the English can boast that record. And when all is said and done, we all are fucking sick and tired of the Americans this and the Americans that on the world scene, and yes George Bush is a stupid git etc . . . but they suck at international football, yes, but let´s root for the underdog. Seems the only time fit to root fur the fucking yanks.

Thanks for your support...I think...LOL
I agree that our national side needs more involvement in tournaments which puts them against stiff competition, which will be difficult as our region (CONCACAF) doesn't have much of that to offer with the exception of Mexico and Costa Rica. On our side of the globe it's CONMEBOL which reigns supreme and they organize the Copa Libertadores. It would be nice if we could have the winner as well as the second and third place teams of the CONCACAF Champions Cup be included in the Copa Libertadores.....well, dare to dream.
We have a long way to go before the MLS gets to the same standards as in Europe or S.America but they're improving. I remember the first season of the MLS and would wince while watching most of the matches. Then there was the 98 WC...oh brother...the loss to Iran was the nail in the coffin. But 2002, what a difference!
and yes, Bush is a stupid git. #cheers#

soccer.....well, to be honest some players from the 60's refer ti it as soccer,,,,its like a slang name for it......it wasnt something the americans made up to seperate two different sports this is from wikipedia: The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time. The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in the 1880s. The word is sometimes credited to Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford University student said to have been fond of shortened forms such as brekkers for breakfast and rugger for rugby football. In the late 19th century the word soccer tended to be used only at public schools; most people knew the game simply as football... so there you go...it was the english that created the term! anyway, the US football team isnt bad, they reached the knockout stages in the last wordl cup, and their manager is hottly tipped to manage a team in europe..... they have some good players, and to be honest one of the main reasons it isnt known throughout the world, europe at least, is due to the fact that it doenst get coverage.... also it is so commercialised....and franchised..the NY/NJ metrostars are now team red bull or summin similar,.....and a game of american soccer is in fact like watching a game of american football....adverts after adverts,,,,its madness....if they cut down on the americanism and made it more europe friendly, it would get more coverage...... also it doesnt help the country is so big...i mean, local derby's dont exist...thats what i think anyway i still call it football though by the way....

Well the sport is much larger than any one nation so football adapts to the culture as it has throughout the world and so is the casein the US. This stage is still developing because we don't have a football/soccer identity on a large scale partly due to lack of public interest.
As for it being commercialized I don't think it's anymore commercialized than it is anywhere else and probably a bit less here as only the NY Red Bulls have a sponsor on their shirt...well they have the have the Red Bull logo plastered everywhere and are the exception. Let's face it, we cannot escape commercialism in football as it is a business and the monies that come in from sponsorship allow clubs to increase their payroll. Now don't get me wrong, I quickly lose interest in sports that are constantly interrupted with ads which is why I tune in and out of most American sports....well, the ad time in baseball works because it's not a game where you need to see what's going on between innings...but I digress...lol.
American soccer should develop as it will and what will draw in foreign audiences will be the quality of play and the passion of its supporters, not whether it is friendly to European audiences or anyone else for that matter. I don't think Europeans fancy Brazilian players and teams because they're like Europeans but it's their quality and love of the game no?

Gotta remember as well, that to most Americans, the crass commercialism plastered over every football jersey in every league (except Barsa, who refuse to be prostitutes) is one of the worst abuses of advertisement you can have. There´s no escaping it. I love the local club here in Colombia where I live. They have a cigarrette company sponsoring them. Or the big coastal team here, Junior de Barranquilla, had a a dairymen association sponsoring them, until they found out the tight connection between this Dairymen Association and the Narco Paramilitary death squad groups. So they had to go back to their alcohol sponsors.
But sometimes, I will say, the fancy, unending, unavoidable, ever changing electrical advirtisement on the fences surrounding the pitch, is more exciting than the Birmingham City-Everton match going on.

Yeah, the sponsors in S.America are interesting...there's something odd about alcohol and tobacco companies sponsoring anything involving athleticism...
