Manchester United are preparing to announce that Neil Wood and Quinton Fortune have been placed in charge of the Under-23 team as the club continues its drive towards appointing former players in key positions. United have been looking for a new Under-23 management team since Ricky Sbragia departed in May. Wood, 36, who came through United’s academy as a player but never made a senior appearance, will take over as head coach with Fortune, who made 126 appearances for the club between 1999 and 2005, serving as his assistant. United have been looking at making a number of changes to the academy structure behind the scenes and are likely to announce Wood and Fortune’s appointments later this week as part of that. Wood represented United’s reserve team as a player before leaving for Coventry City in 2004 and later played for Oldham Athletic. He returned to United in September 2014 as an academy coach after impressing in a similar role at Aston Villa. Fortune was a team-mate of United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the pair have remained close ever since. The popular South African, 42, was assistant manager of Cardiff City’s Under-21 side during Solskjaer’s time in charge of the first team and has more recently worked as a MUTV pundit. www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/07/03/manchester-united-place-neil-wood-quinton-fortune-charge-under/

So Neil Wood, is he a good appointment? I'd never even heard of him.. NEIL WOOD has been promoted to Under-23 coach by Manchester United, with Quinton Fortune as his assistant. As TGG reported in May, the 36-year-old emerged as the front-runner to take the job following the departure of Ricky Sbragia after less than two years. Wood had assisted the Scot with the U23s in 2018/19 and was a prominent figure during both training and matches. He came through the ranks at United as a youth player, although he never made a senior appearance for the club, instead going on to play for Blackpool, Oldham and Zeljeznicar Sarajevo. After retiring from playing, Wood embarked on a career as a coach and worked for Aston Villa before returning to United in September 2014. Because of his background at United as both a player and coach, he is regarded as having an intrinsic understanding of the club’s DNA, while also being young and progressive coach. South African Fortune, 42, made 126 appearances for United between 1999 and 2005 and was assistant for Cardiff’s U21s during Solskjaer’s time there as manager. Sbragia, 62, left at the end of the season by mutual consent. Contrary to reports, he did not depart because of results - United had finished sixth in the second tier of Premier League 2 - but because he was no longer regarded as the best man to deliver the development programme the club wanted. He had returned to United in July 2017, having previously been reserve team manager under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2002 to 2005.

Manchester United’s Under-23s and Under-18s are currently in Austria, preparing for the 2019/20 Academy season. The young Reds have trained in Obertraun in the last two summers but are based closer to the capital Vienna this time around. There is the opportunity for the newly appointed coaches Neil Wood and Quinton Fortune to work with the older group, while Neil Ryan is putting his first and second-year scholars through their paces. The club's Head of Academy, Nicky Butt, is also in attendance, overseeing the sessions. The pre-season camps have proved popular in the past with staff and players alike, as they provide a great launchpad for the upcoming campaign. “First of all, it’s about getting back to full fitness,” explained midfielder Arnau Puigmal. “Everyone knows it’s difficult to return to that 100 per cent fitness level. It’s really hard as it’s more running and gym work than in Spain but I’m used to it now. “It’s also good to get back to being with the group as it’s like a family there. Everyone is together – the Under-18s, Under-23s and the staff.” Fellow midfield man Ethan Galbraith feels it will be educational to make the most of the new facilities. “It’s a different place and a different experience, which is what we’re looking for all the time,” he said. “So I’m looking forward to it. “It’s been hot in Manchester but it’s even hotter in Austria and we know the physical work is going to get even harder. The strength and conditioning coaches have different programmes for every individual player and we know it’s what we do off the pitch that makes us play well on it.” The temperatures are currently a few degrees warmer out near Vienna, but the location is cooler than Obertraun, and this is not a concern for keeper Alex Fojticek. ”I’m used to hot weather in the summer as I’m from Slovakia,” he said. “We get cold winters but, in the spring, summer and autumn, it’s always hot. The most important thing is to prepare for the new season. We get one week here and it’s always really tough, but it's great to be back together as a group.“ United’s Under-23s have arranged a friendly on Friday against Austria Vienna at the Franz Horr Stadium. A number of the players have faced the hosts in the past but in an indoor competition staged in Germany. “They were a great team at five-a-side, having a lot of possession, and they were a threat attacking-wise,” commented forward Largie Ramazani. “We know it’s going to be a tough game.” “When teams play against a big club like United it’s huge for them, so they’ll be coming out all guns blazing,” added defender Di’Shon Bernard. “We need to match their work levels and be better. I think everyone needs game time to prepare themselves for the season and it’s always good experience playing a team from abroad because you can see their different qualities and abilities.” The club has also organised two matches at the STATSports Super Cup NI tournament in Northern Ireland, taking on Rangers in Coleraine on Saturday 27 July (17:30 BST) and Ballymena United on Monday 29 July (19:30 BST). The latter fixture at Ballymena Showgrounds will pit the Reds against a side who are currently in the Europa League and are managed by an ex-United youth-team player David Jeffrey. “I have fond memories of my time at Manchester United as a 14-year-old schoolboy, as an apprentice and then as a young pro,” explained Jeffrey. “Unfortunately, I didn’t stay on but I am proud to have been there and the club blazer still hangs in my wardrobe. It is one of my most cherished possessions.” www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/man-utd-u23s-and-u18s-prepare-for-tough-week-in-austria?utm_campaign=ManUtd&utm_medium=post&utm_source=twitter

Manchester United have been drawn in Group H of the northern section of the EFL Trophy after entering the competition for the first time. Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United and Lincoln City are to provide the opposition after United were the last club to come out of the hat during the draw, which was made live on Talksport. The Reds, who are fielding a primarily Under-21 team, will play all three group games away from home as the 'invited team' in the pool. Neil Wood is in charge of the team, with Quinton Fortune assisting and Head of Academy Nicky Butt overseeing things. EFL TROPHY NORTHERN DRAW Group A: Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United, Sunderland, Leicester City. Group B: Accrington Stanley, Oldham Athletic, Fleetwood Town, Liverpool. Group C: Bury, Salford City, Tranmere Rovers, Aston Villa. Group D: Port Vale, Shrewsbury, Macclesfield Town, Newcastle United. Group E: Crewe Alexandra, Burton Albion, Mansfield Town, Everton. Group F: Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, Rochdale, Manchester City. Group G: Blackpool, Carlisle United, Morecambe, Wolves. Group H: Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United, Lincoln City, UNITED. “It’s a new exciting challenge,” Wood told ManUtd.com. “We’ve not been in the competition before so it’s a new experience. We’ll be playing in stadiums, with a crowd there, and the expectation when United come to these grounds is always higher anyway. “So we’ve got an atmosphere which is hard to recreate and it’s really challenging but exciting at the same time for the boys to be part of that. They’ll be playing against first-team players and, as it’s open-age, they'll be older players and it’s something they have to get used to.” ”It’s going to be hard, there will be ups and downs and times they do well but times they suffer against older, more physical opponents. It's something they must deal with to bridge that gap from the Under-23s to first-team football. I’m excited as the lads have got the right character and determination to be ready for the challenge posed by these games.“ The rules state that at least six of the starting XI must be aged 21 or under on 30 June 2019 and there must be no more than two players who are over 21 and have made more than 40 appearances for the first team, again as of the end of last month. The dates and times of the fixtures will be confirmed in due course, but the first ties will be played on w/c 2 September. www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/man-utd-discover-efl-trophy-opponents-after-draw?utm_campaign=ManUtd&utm_medium=post&utm_source=twitter

www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7241059/Manchester-United-fail-tie-teenage-goalscoring-sensation-Mipo-Odubeko-new-contract.htmlManchester United have lost teenage goalscoring sensation Mipo Odubeko after the youngster turned down a new contract. The 16-year-old scored 35 goals for United's academy last season and was viewed as one of the club's hottest prospects. But the Republic of Ireland Under-17 international's contract expired at the end of June and he has now rejected the offer of an extension - believing his development is better served away from United. He has now left the club, sparking a frantic scramble for his signature. Odubeko's decision to leave has alerted clubs across the continent. Feyenoord, Bayern Munich and Genoa are ready to move in the race to land Odubeko - with the growing likelihood that the teenager will move abroad. Newcastle and Burnley are among the sides in England to have a concrete interest in the youngster.

Maybe someone whispering in his ear?

Alot of the youngsters are seeing how a number of British & Irish youngsters are thriving abroad and fancy their chances. Especially when foreign clubs, with decent records of developing youngsters, are interested in signing them. Reverse situation of United, et al, snapping up top youngsters from foreign teams really.

Yeah, I guess you are right...it just feels wrong having one of our brighter prospects leave us at such an early age... I was just wondering as it sounds as though his family might be from Nigeria and having spent a lot of time there, I am aware how certain 'influences' can come to bear... My thoughts were that an agent had possibly offered the family money to persuade the player to move...that's possibly libellous and I'm not saying it happened...it just feels a little suspicious...
