I'm sick of us constatnly trying to wedge players here there & everywhere to fit the players in. We need to start buying players that fit a specific formation & specific style of play. We need to be a little more ruthless.
442 has become extrememly unfashionable but it's still the best formation in my eyes particularly in England. Moving away from the 442 to suit Europe is what causes the smaller teams to be so competetive. They still use the old English style of power & pace & it causes flair players in top teams lots of problems. we Have no Europe this season so i want a return to 442.
-Rafa--Jones--Rojo--Shaw Winger-Herrera-Blind-Di Maria -----Rooney----Falcao---
This means no Mata (love you anyway) & a new winger must be bought. Januzaj will have to play as backup to Di Maria on the left Wing. RVP will have to share with Rooney & Falc. No more sentiment. This should be our starting lineup week in week out.
Give me your preferred Formation that we should look to play. Not the one where we shoohorn players we prefer who don't quite fit.

Honestly I like the formation we have now with a back four and then a diamond in front. The issue for me currently isn't the formation, it's the lack of leadership and presence in the side. There's no big, assured personality in that defence who is organising things, sussing out danger, keeping the younger/newer players calm and composed under pressure. Honestly if that defence had just one player like Ferdinand, Vidic, Bruce or Stam then you would see a world of difference. I'm not saying the team would suddenly become world class overnight but you would definitely see an end to the shambolic lack of organisation in defence, awful communication, painfully easily rattled nerves, terrible positioning and lack of anticipation.
I think long-term Jones could be that man but he has enough issues in his own game to iron out at the moment without him trying to lead other players. He can be a fantastic, powerful defender on his day but he's also prone to huge lapses in concentration, misjudged tackles and poor positioning, not to mention his injury record.
Again with Rojo I'm convinced he'll be a top defender for us but he needs someone assured and commanding next to him to make his settling in easier, Vidic had that with Ferdinand and look how much it helped. Evans should have stepped up to replace Ferdinand with his big-game experience but so far has been woefully disappointing. Smalling's development seems to have completely stalled and then there's the impressive but still very young McNair and Blackett, who are still going to make mistakes and aren't going to be great every game.
Players like Herrera and Blind are going to grow into the side and they have been impressive so far but are showing naivety at times and signs that they haven't quite gelled yet. Like others have said, this has been a HUGE overhaul for the first-team squad and it'll take time for the players to properly click, adapt to van Gaal's methods and really start running like a well-oiled machine. It just needs someone to step up. Rooney isn't really captain material, Evans has shied away from what should have been his time to step up and, as such, the exciting young players don't have anyone on the pitch to guide and compose them, hence United desperately flapping around every time they are put under pressure or concede a goal.

It's often said that some managers don't know there best 11,we currently have a manager that does not even know his best tactical formation, let alone the best 11 to play the system. If there is logic to this philosophy ,I'm yet to see any evidence of it. It's still a bit of a bloody mess & I'm not sure Moyes is completely responsible for creating all of the very obvious problems we still have.

If there is logic to this philosophy ,I'm yet to see any evidence of it. And this is what I liked about Giggs. He actually impressed me more than Moyes and LVG so far. He had a clear tactical plan. Only problem being we didn't have the right players for it at all but given a transfer window he would have known exactly who to go for. Obviously it was too early for him but similar to Mourinho in the way he announced how the team would play. LVG keeps talking about his philosophy and I have no idea what it is. I would like a formation we stick to and players bought for that formation and Style.

Rafael--Smalling--rojo--Shaw Winger-Blind-Herrera-Di Maria -----Wilson---Other Forward-
I wanted to include Fellaini for muscle but how can you leave out Blind? I think Fellaini is really helpful in certain games so either put him into a midfield 3 by removing other forward or sub him in the midfield two. I would think this would be realistic for next season. Wouldn't mind seeing Smalling replaced but the rojo and Smalling combo has come on leaps and bounds.
Rafa is always injured and should maybe be replaced.

I think Jones/Rojo is our best centre half pairing

4-5-1 that can easily transition to a 4-3-3 (double pivot).
RB - Jones - Rojo - Shaw Di Maria - Blind - Herrera - Januzaj Mata Falcao
This is the most solid team you can produce with the squad at hand.
Double pivot with Blind and Herrera while Di Maria and Januzaj can stretch to the corners. Mata is of course the key. If he runs side to side and always presents for the quick 1-2 through the middle, THIS positioning with these players will yield goals and an easy way to press high.
No room for PHC or Van Persie.

DDG RB(McNair?) CD Rojo Shaw Blind Herrera CM Di Maria Falcao Janujaz I would like to see McNair tried out as RB as he looked ok there against chesterfield, ok they are league 2 but still. We need another WC/Very good CD as the 3 stooges are not good enough. A proper CM someone like a Robbo or Keane to play along Herrera, not Rooney. The 3 up front would be quality as Januzaj can only get better with game time and the other 2 speak for themselves. In fact Falcao would probably be better as the lone target man. With what we already have I suppose Jones and Rooney to occupy the 2 blank spaces

What comes first chicken or the egg? Applies to player-formation scenario. The master craftsman makes the tools fit the job. Oh and btw doesn't blame his tools when he botches the job (ergo LVG).

So, like this? To me that's 4-4-1-1, and what it should look like with and without possession. Irrelevant what you call it really, I agree that is our best system.
