Luke Young's World Cup dreams are over after he was forced to withdraw from England's standby squad.

The defender had been given a spot on the standby list by Sven Goran Eriksson, so would only have made the trip to Germany had one of the chosen 23 picked up an injury between now and June 9, but he has reported discomfort in his ankle.

After speaking with Eriksson, Young opted to withdraw from the squad and will now take the summer off to rest his ankle.

Young damaged his ankle against West Ham United at the start of April, but was confident of shaking off the problem and made the trip to Portugal with the rest of the squad.

However, he pulled up in a training session on Friday and Eriksson must now decide whether to call in a replacement for next week's training camp.

England have friendlies against Belarus, Jamaica and Hungary prior to the World Cup opener with Paraguay on June 10.
