Germany win six-goal thriller in opening game of World Cup 2006
FULL TIME The game was a great spectacle but I've got to say the German defence was diabolical. Two great goals and early shouts for goal of the tournament. Klosé and Wanchope looked lively, both grabbing two goals in a very open entertaining game. In a group containing Ecuador and Poland, Costa Rica could surprise a few and qualify. As for Germany, they will qualify but in all honesty as soon as they meet a 'bigger' side their defence will be ripped to shreds.
MAN OF THE MATCH: TORSTEN FRINGS (GER) As well as the goal of the game, he was everywhere for Germany today. I can't remember him once misplacing a pass and was immence, fully deserving his goal.
MOAN OF THE MATCH: Apart from the GERMAN DEFENCE which was ripped apart by a very average attacking side, I must say the FOOTBALL is the moan of the match and will prove to be moan of the tournament. Too much swerve and as Paul Robinson said it's '' 'keeper unfriendly ''
SCORE: Germany 4-2 Costa Rica

With those balls we need Rooney pinging them from 30-40 yards all the time. ;D

Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney are going to have a laugh aren't they.

With these new balls I see a midfielder getting the Golden Boot. Hopefully, an English one and I want it to be David Beckham. He deserves to go into what maybe his last World Cup and leave his print on English international football's history, after all he has won everything you can at club level, the only thing that is missing is an international trophy!

Ecuador take surprise lead into the break
HALF-TIME: Ecuador took a surprise lead at around the halfway stage of the first half with a well worked goal, prompting scenes of jubilation from the minority in the Gelsenkirchen stadium. Poland have looked jaded and their star man, Celtic forward, Zurawski looks a lonely figure up front constantly getting muscled off the ball by the Ecuadorian defence. I expect the Polish manager to change things around at the half-time break and I am still sticking by my prediction for this one.
SCORE: Poland 0-1 Ecuador

No real surprise that Costa Rica got a thumping. Even with Germany’s weak side, compared to previous past teams, Costa Rica didn’t stand a chance. God help Germany against decent teams to be honest, they’ll be mauled.

Ecuador surprise Poles in gritty battle
FULL TIME The game was end-to-end for most of the game, with Poland having the Lions' share of possession. But, Ecuador sprung the first surprise of the tournament with only their second win EVER in the World Cup which was fully deserved. They were tight at the back and excellent on the break, Poland on the other hand were toothless up front and although they had the most possession never really looked like scoring.
MAN OF THE MATCH: AGUSTIN DELGADO (ECU) The former Southampton man grabbed the winning goal on the break and was lively for the entire game although his side only had a little possession.
MOAN OF THE MATCH: POLISH ATTACK. The Poland side, who finished second in England's qualifying group, never ever looked like scoring although they had most possession. They were not exploiting the space down the wings and Zurawski looked a lonely figure up front.
SCORE: Poland 0-2 Ecuador

Ecuador's defence really impressed me today, they were chasing every pass, clearing every cross, and Poland got no way near the goal until after Ecuador were comfortably 2-0 up!
Germany's first and second goals were fantastic!

QUE VIVA ECUADOR!!!!
Glad they showed up to play! Their defense worked really well and looked calm and collected at the back. I think some work in their passing would help as they turned possession over often. Poland didn't look like they could piece much together though those two shots that hit the crossbar could have turned it around. Germany will be a tough opponent and I don't see Ecuador having the strength up front to really take it to Germany but I think trying to hold them at midfield and playing the counter attack could lead to a surprise but I wouldn't place money on it...lol.
They have a good chance of coming in second...beating Costa Rica is very possible.
;D

The next games in the group are Ecuador/Costa Rica and Poland/Germany. I see the winner of Ecuador/Costa Rica qualifying with Germany.

I think Ecuador can do it against Costa Rica if they defend like they did against Poland, though CR is going to have a bit more bite with Wanchope. Should be an interesting match.
