Portugal captain Luis Figo has been cleared to face England after escaping punishment for his headbutt on Mark van Bommel.

Figo appeared to headbutt Holland midfielder van Bommel in the second half of Sunday's bad-tempered clash.

The Internazionale winger was booked for the incident by referee Valentin Ivanov, but it was suggested Figo could face further punishment for the offence.

However, Fifa insist Figo has no case to answer and is free to play against England in their quarter final on Saturday.

Fifa communications director Markus Siegler said: "He was sanctioned immediately by the referee at the time.

"The referee's report came in last night and is being analysed by the relevant people but it is very unlikely anything will happen as he has been sanctioned already.

"It is only where there is a clear disciplinary issue which has not been acted upon by the referee that the (disciplinary) committee can look at it."

The news is a boost for Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as he is already without key midfield duo Deco and Costinha for the game with England because of suspension.

What an absolute fucking disgrace. I mean, excuse my language but first of all, that knob head of a referee didn’t even see the incident, so a booking was beyond me. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the card was only a yellow!? And to make things even WORSE no further action is being taken on fat Figo?

So now all of a sudden head butting (weak or not) somebody is the same card offence as taking too long to take a goal kick, or running to shout at your defence instead of collecting the ball? BULLSHIT!

I think that he did his yellowing of Figo thanks to the linesman. Trouble is too many refs in this tournament can't take the pressure and when it comes, they see "Big Brother FIFA is watching me" and react accordingly. Probably, most of the yellows were justified according to the strict letter and that's what the plonker applied.

Ive heard the commentators giving the refs jip for some decisions that they got 100% correct, even after the highlights shown or replays on the incidents they have still questioned the ref decision and all he has done has acted to the laws of the game and it's been blatantly obvious to anyone who follows football that they have made the right decision.

One of the last few matches, Argentina I think, had a ref who booked nobody at first. Quiet kind of ref, Spanish I think, who had "a few words" before lashing cards around. Didn't stop him making a couple of cock-ups but I half expect that anyway. Anyway, the point is HE wasn't the centre of attraction, the teams were and entertainment won. I felt sorry for the ref last night because although I think he was too officious, what chance did he have with the amount of history flying round last night. Only one ref could have handled that properly and he's making too much money flogging Vauxhalls to worry.
