Bike Animal Honda’s Leon Camier suffered a disastrous day at Cadwell Park for the 11th round of the British Superbike Championship despite having faired strongly throughout practice.
Camier got a good start to the first 18-lap race and completed lap one in fourth position. The 21-year-old settled into a rhythm and began to chase down fellow Honda rider Tom Sykes.
Camier passed Sykes for third position on lap six at Mansfield and began his hunt for the leading pair. On lap nine the Dunlop-backed rider set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:26.911. By this point the former British Supersport Champion was riding superbly; close behind race leader Leon Haslam and second placed-man Jonathan Rea.
However, on lap 11 Ashford-man Camier suffered some misfortune at the chicane when he had a coming together with Rea which caused him to crash out of the race.
In race two Camier got a steady start and completed the first lap in 10th position and by lap seven the Bike Animal Honda rider had elevated himself to seventh place.
On lap nine disaster struck when Camier dramatically highsided at the Mountain Top and landed heavily. He has been taken to hospital with injuries to his left leg but it is unclear at this stage the extent of the damage.
The race was won by Jonathan Rea with championship leader Ryuichi Kiyonari in second place and Gregorio Lavilla in third.
Honda also won the manufacturers championship today and is 104 points clear of Ducati with only 100 points available in the remaining two rounds.

“After working so hard on his technique and chassis set-up, the result of today really doesn’t do Leon or Bike Animal Honda any justice. We have been consistently quick throughout all of the practice sessions and we made some changes in warm-up which improved this further. The first race showed just how strong Leon is as we were looking for a podium finish. The collision with Jonathan Rea was just a racing incident; Leon came off worst and was unable to re-start as he had an injury to his leg. In race two he got a bad start and was beginning to come through the field. The crash over the mountain resulted in a serious injury to his left leg and he is now currently in hospital receiving medical attention.”

Horrible crash and an awful injury to match it. Don't wish an injury like that onto anyone, very painful. Wish him a speedy recovery.
