Bonds sets new US home run record Barry Bonds has hit his 756th home run, beating Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 home runs in American Major League baseball, set in 1974.
The San Francisco Giants slugger broke the record in front of his home crowd, hitting the run off a pitch from Washington Nationals' Mike Bacsik.
His achievement has been overshadowed by claims he has used steroids.
The left-handed Bonds has never tested positive for drug use, and denies having done so knowingly.
But rumours have persisted since his home run tally took off after he turned 35, moving past the legendary Babe Ruth into second place in May last year with his 715th career home run.
"Thank you very much. I got to thank all of you, all the fans here in San Francisco. It's been fantastic," said Bonds, after he crossed home plate.
He then burst into tears, as he acknowledged his late father, Bobby.
"To my dad," he said, pointing to the sky. "Thank you for everything."
Hank Aaron was not present to see his record broken, but he sent a tape message of congratulation.
"It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination," Aaron said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have always been a Giants fan and been to lots of their games, I don't think he deserves the title.

So what its baseball. I hear he used steroids. But the same happened with Lance Armstrong. If he did achieve this feat without the aid of performance enhancing drugs then he deserves praise. Otherwise he should sling his hook.

I lost all respect for Bonds and his record the moment the news broke about his steroid use, which has been a massive problem in baseball. Personally I don't think he deserves the praise because of the steroid use but when so many players have supposedly used them it doesn't seem like much of an advantage.

yeah maybe he used performance enhancing drugs which means he could slug it further but surely to do that you have to make contact with the ball and unless i'm mistaken i don't think there's a drug to make you hit a baseball everytime is there? If there is no conclusive evidence of drug use surely Mr Barry 'my heads to big for my helmet, I'll go get another one' Bonds deserves it?

There's no doubt that steroids aren't going to help you have an eye for the ball, so I don't disagree with you there. My issue is that if he cheated by using performance enhancing drugs to make him stronger to hit it farther then did he really break the record? Hank Aaron wasn't on steroids when he set that record so why should it be overtaken by someone who used help to break it? If he used a bat with cork in the middle there'd be no question so why is this different?

tbh i don't think this is half the issue among the american public, correct me if i'm wrong but there was uproar when hank aaron broke the record previous, held by the Babe Ruthe this was due to colour of his skin, i think they like records to stand, they will have to learn to live with this whether they like him or not

I understand that the underlying problem that America has with Bonds is that he's a big black man playing a sport that since it's inception has had problems with black participants.
Once upon a time, blacks couldn't even play in the league... they were forced to play in their own league!
Regarding the steroid issue... I'm by no means condoning the use or Bonds's supposed use but wasn't it the case that steroids were LEGAL in Baseball up until about 5 years ago?
