TENNIS ace Martina Hingis admitted testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon — as she quit the sport yesterday.
The ex-world No1, 27, angrily denied taking the Class A drug at this year’s tournament.
But she told a press conference the pressure of the investigation had forced her to quit tennis.
Hingis branded her position “horrendous” — insisting: “My only performance enhancer is the love of the game.
“When I was informed I had failed the test following my defeat at Wimbledon I was shocked and appalled. I have no desire to spend the next seven years fighting doping officials. "I’m frustrated and angry because I believe I’m 100 per cent innocent.”
Swiss Hingis, who has earned over £10million in her career, was knocked out in the third round at Wimbledon by US star Laura Granville.
Her personal life was in turmoil at the time as she had just been dumped by Czech player Radek Stepanek.
In 2001 she backed a drive to educate youngsters about the dangers of drug abuse.
The Sony Ericsson Women’s Tour last night said it had received no “official information” about Hingis’s drug test result.

Funny how the tennis world started to look like...it is a real shame cos i never liked her...but when she made her return i was pretty happy cos after all this time there was again a real champion on the female circuit, now we learn that "champion" is drug addicted,so she didn't gave a good reputation at this sport who is losing lots of vredibility; well now i can understand why i never liked her.

Lets not get on a moral highground concerning substance abuse. Martini was a brilliant player and that is what I will remember. At least she has the decency to quit and not fight the result. Lets not forget our beloved Rio who purposely missed a test....mmmmmm I wonder why.

Bit daft to quit the game instead of clearing her name. I bet she did it.

The shit he took had obviously worked out of his system and he could feel confident going back. And once an athlete gets mentioned in the same breath as positive drugs test, it is extrememly difficult to clear our name.

And once an athlete gets mentioned in the same breath as positive drugs test, it is extrememly difficult to clear our name. There are several reasons as to why Rio missed his test, one of course being that he is but simple and his intelligence has been questioned several times. However Rio did have a different test taken and what the FA didn't put a lot of effort into explaining was that any substances that Rio would have had in him at the time of his original test would still have shown in their excessive tests. And Rio offered to take his test about half an hour or so after he should have done, as he was in the care driving home. That just reeks of guilt doesn't it. That said Rio did deserve his ban, because he broke the rule, the problem came when the FA made a joke out of their own rules by rewarding people who tested positive with shorter bans than him. You obviously seem to have a problem with people actually having morals, which to be honest is not really giving your own personality much of a compliment, however I am not having a go at you I am simply making a statement. Perhaps before making another comment about people having morals, you might want to have a look at your own lack of them before you criticize others. And you don't quit down to decency when you get caught doing drugs, if you were innocent you would fight the allegations. Thing is the chances of these tests being wrong are higher when it comes to some forms of drugs than others, however Cocaine is not one of them. Hingis leaving is almost as good as a written confession.

I think i'd be on coke as well with the way women's tennis has gone. Built like men powering the ball into each corner until the opponent cannot return it. Hingis stood for tennis flair, her problem was she had no power and power rules now.

Anyway , I was of the opinion that this was a football forum and as such draws fans from a wide variety of cultures and life experiences. And if you want to know, I dont have an issue with people who use drugs and are portrayed as bad/evil/losers etc and that does not mean I dont have morals, whatever you may think.

I'd think if she were innocent, she would have fought the claims all the way and not have bowed out if she truly loved the game. Alternatively, retiring at 27 to do nothing with 20 million $ at your name isn't that shabby at all.

Oh and Rio has been offered to go back the same day no a week after so as u can see poiting your finger against Rio has no sense. Its not not a moral thing cos i never liked her anyway(yes i was happy when she made her return cos in the women she was and i think she is the best) but getting coke and ruin your reputation like that its pretty stupid.

But i keep wondering one thing: How come WTA never take a look a players like S.Williams,if she wasn't dope at some point of her carreer than im Mother Theresa!

I don't think she did it. And even if she did it's not like she were on steroids, Cocaine won't improve how you play tennis, so she should still be regarded as a great player.
