Disgraced US sprinter Marion Jones has been sent to prison for six months for lying to federal prosecutors over steroid use and drugs fraud.
More StoriesBoldon wants life-ban for cheats U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth Karas imposed the sentence after Jones pleaded guilty to two charges last October, part of a stunning demise of the five-time medalist from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Karas gave Jones six months for lying about steroid use and two months - to run concurrently - for a separate charge of misleading federal investigators about her knowledge of a check fraud case involving her ex-boyfriend, former 100 metres world record holder Tim Montgomery.
Jones, 32, became the biggest name in international sport to admit to using steroids with her guilty plea in October. She tearfully admitted to betraying the trust of her fans and country after years of vehemently denying she used performance enhancing drugs.
She confessed to lying to federal investigators in 2003 when she denied knowing that she took the banned substance tetrahydrogestrinone, known as "the clear," before the 2000 Olympics.
As part of her plea deal, prosecutors asked the judge to sentence her to between zero and six months in prison, and defense lawyers asked for mercy because she had suffered public humiliation.
Jones has been stripped of the five track and field medals she won in Sydney, three of them gold, and all of her performances as of September 2000 have been erased from the record books.
Jones, who once pulled in millions of dollars in product endorsements, is now in financial ruin.

Can't say he didn't have it coming, but it's still sad to see someone's life laid to ruin. There's a lot of pressure for athletes to maintain top form and constantly win so while he made the choice to use steroids and lie about it, you can understand what leads people to do these kind of things.

Yes, It probably wasn't entirely her decision

I think she has been punished enough, and 6 months are just fine, maybe even a bit too much. I mean, as Jorge has said, athletes are under immense pressure and the decision she made about using illegel substances may not have been entirely hers. She has been stripped of her medals and lost all her money, and now this prison sentence - I think she's learnt her lesson.

Sorry but its a matter of saying YES OR NOT! U can't cheat like that just bcos u wanna win Doping is cheating and just bcos she kept to say she wasn't dope for years to me 6 months are not enough.
Look in tennis if ATP catch u dope u're out for about 2 years. She won cheating and she was all smiles for her medals, she didn't win with honesty and hard work like others.
athletes who use any form of dope to win are cheaters and shouldn't be called athletes or winners.
Just look at Bode Miller who say is right to dope..."in italy we say the first chicken who speak is the one who made the egg" so if he says is right to dope probably he's a dope himself.
If u're good enough u can win without any help, just proving yourself the results will come through,if u're not stay at home.

I was saying that the 6 months she got, on top of all the other sanctions she got, was enough and that she has probably learnt her lesson.

She's not been jailed for cheating. She's been jailed forlying to Federal Officers. A Federal crime, if I'm not mistaken.
So 6 months is fully deserved. Not only is she a cheat, but she's a liar too. The worst kind of scum.

She's lucky I'm not a judge, I'd stick her in jail for 5 years.

She's lucky I'm not a judge, I'd stick her in jail for 5 years. She has already been punished by having her medals taken away, plus all the bad rep whe got now. No one considers her a hero anymore. I think that's her greatest punishment. Offcourse, lying to Federal officials is a criminal offence, but let's face it, it's not like she's a real criminal. Just look at how many rapists, muggers, wife-beaters, and killers are out there. What she did is not that bad when you compare it to other crimes.

She "Stole" those medals by taking stuff in the first place. She's getting what she deserves.
