Evander Holyfield claims he could meet old foe Mike Tyson for a third time despite both former undisputed world heavyweight champions being in their 40s.
Both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield are way past their prime years and this “Circus” of a fight will only tarnish their reputations as two of the most feared fighters in the history of sport.
I grew up watching the sport of boxing with my uncles starting in the late 80’s. My favorite heavyweight of all time is definitely Iron Mike. His tenacity and drive was unmatched and he just ripped through his opponents at will. He was really the sole reason I watched heavyweight bouts period. Growing up guys such as Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Lenard, and Roberto Duran were the headlines of most big boxing events, but with the arrival of Iron Mike, things took a turn or the better in the heavyweight division.
Mike Tyson finally let his fame get to him and it ultimately lead to his undoing. It was a shameful time for him when he went to prison for rape and everything went downhill from then on.
I recall that Tyson did attempt a comeback several years ago to help pay for all his debts he had acquired over the years, and I was so embarrassed when I heard my childhood hero quit fighting in the middle of a round against Kevin McBride. Iron Mike never quits, or so I thought.
Anyway, from my standpoint, this fight is nothing but a big money making ploy. I’m pretty sure that everyone else who follows boxing feels the same way. Tyson’s days are done and and he needs to leave his gloves on the shelf. For the sake of your fans Tyson, don’t make a fool out of yourself and fight for the sake of making money. The aura of “Iron Mike Tyson” is far more valuable than a couple thousand dollars to pay your bills. Your heart is not with the sport of boxing any longer, and for those of us who looked up to you growing up during your glory years, its sure makes us feel stupid. Let us remember you as one of the greatest boxers to ever grace the sport. Not as a clown who used his past fame to earn a couple bucks.
