Mainly recorded in Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland, REM return with their new album 'Accelerate' which i've been listening to on my iPod and on CD for the past few days. Definitely a grower and definitely one of REM's better albums for a while.
The album starts with three rocking tracks....'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' a great opener in which Stipe tries to drag us into the album by signing '...and baby i'm calling you on that'.
Next is 'Man-Sized Wreath' an impressive rocker which again moves along nicely, Stipe informs us to '..kick it out on the dance floor..' of course we will! ....he wants everything on this track....'...give me some.'
Next, 'Supernatural Superserious' the current single getting plenty of air-play, just a great song which everybody on here has probably already heard.
Next it's 'Hollow Man', a slower paced track with an upbeat chorus, this is the first of two slower songs on the album..on this track Stipe sings beautifully '...i see this echoing'.
Next 'Houston' a guitar intro, again slower but nicely paced tune, Stipe croons '...if the storm doesn't kill me the government will..' a nice thought!
Next 'Accelerate' a rocking run-of-the-miller but solid, Stipe wants to leg it!....'...where is the cartoon escape hatch for me.'
Next, 'Until The Day Is Done' another nice guitar intro a good track, Stipe is singing '...a voice whispers 'son', this blessed vision come.'
Next, 'Mr.Richards' a truely excellent song, this is like an attempt to slag off your old teacher...Stipe tells him '...you can thump your chest and rattle...' that's telling him!
Next 'Sing For The Submarine' the pace slows nicely.
Next, 'Horse To Water' probably the best song on the album. It's a hundred mile an hour stuff and a cracking song. Stipe sings '...pick a fight, launch a buzzy bar brawl, Friday night.' Thanks for the advice!
We end with 'I'm Gonna DJ' , a brilliant song with just an element of taking the piss out of DJ's worldwide.. Stipe lets us know that '..death is pretty final. I'm collecting vinyl...'
So, if you've got just over half an hour to spare during you busy life, you could do yourself a favour and listen to REM's new album and eventually get addicted. Interesting on the first listen, but most definitely a grower...Recommended. ;D
