Barclays Premier Reserve League
Christie Park, 26 January
BLACKBURN ROVERS 2
Villanueva 2
MANCHESTER UNITED 1
Brandy
United's return to reserve league action resulted in defeat when an uneventful first half gave way to a quick burst of goals in the second period.
Home side Blackburn Rovers crucially scored the first two, both through Chilean international Carlos Villanueva, before Febian Brandy pulled one back for the Reds at Morecambe FC's Christie Park.
United defenders including captain James Chester appealed as Villanueva appeared to use an arm to control the ball for his first goal, but nobody could argue with the finish as the South American rifled a shot across Ben Amos while leaning back under a challenge.
Blackburn's decisive second goal was even better - first-team winger Martin Olsson found time and space on the left flank to line up a low cross and Villanueva converted it at the near post with a cheeky flick of his back foot.
Brandy's goal was created superbly by Davide Petrucci, who took a leaf out of Michael Carrick's book with a floated long-range pass, executed with the outside of his right boot on the halfway line. When the ball dropped in Blackburn's half, Brandy let it bounce twice before cleverly lofting it over the advancing goalkeeper Jason Brown.
That's where the scoring ended, despite two decent attempts from outside the area by United midfielder Matty James.
Otherwise the main incidents involved the referee and Ritchie De Laet, the Reds' recent signing from Stoke City. The Belgian defender was booked in the 65th minute for a firm but seemingly fair challenge; after that, he was perhaps fortunate to escape a red as he rattled into his opponents with some rash tackling.
The reverse was United's third in seven league games so far this season. Recent postponements have left the Reds with plenty of matches to catch up on, the next is at home (Moss Lane, Altrincham FC) against Liverpool this Thursday ay 19:00 GMT.
More to follow...
United: Amos; Evans C, De Laet, Chester, Derbyshire (Dudgeon, 75); James, Eikrem (Bryan, 85), Drinkwater, Petrucci (Stewart, 64); Macheda, Brandy.
Subs not used: Devlin, Norwood
Petrucci's looking really good so far this season. Don't know what to make of De Laet yet.
