Reserves: United 4 Hull 0
United's Reserves continued their fine form by pummelling Hull City at Moss Lane on Thursday.
A pair of goals in each half did the damage for United, who survived a shaky opening 20 minutes before comfortably disposing of the division's bottom side. Kiko Macheda opened the scoring from the spot, before Danny Welbeck, Rodrigo Possebon and Lee Martin gave the scoreline an emphatic edge. It wasn't all plain-sailing, as the Tigers passed up several gilt-edged chances.
Ryan Kendall spurned two glorious early opportunities, blazing over from 10 yards and then poking a shot wide with just Tomasz Kuszczak to beat, while Nicky Featherstone stroked another shot just wide.
Visting defender Nathan Hanley rashly upended Martin inside the area on 23 minutes, giving Macheda the chance to smash his spot-kick inside the post. From there, United never looked back. The Reds' lead was doubled on the half-hour mark, as Welbeck joined his strike partner on the scoresheet, latching onto Possebon's through-ball and casually lifting the ball over goalkeeper Tom Woodhead.
Shortly after the restart, the game was ended as a contest. Martin's cross reached Welbeck at the back post, and his drilled pull-back deflected to the feet of Possebon, who couldn't miss from four yards out. Chances continued to come thick and fast as United poured forward. Welbeck and Danny Drinkwater were both denied by Woodhead, before Martin seized on a loose ball and clipped his finish over the Tigers stopper.
Hull were overrun, and were delighted to see Welbeck withdrawn midway through the second half along with full-backs Richard Eckersley and Fabio; all three could be involved in Saturday's first-team squad to face Fulham. For the second string it's four goals, three points and another swaggering display from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges.
United: Kuszczak; Eckersley (Eikrem 56), C Evans, De Laet, Fabio (Gill 46);
Drinkwater, James, Possebon, Martin; Macheda, Welbeck (Bryan 73).
Subs not used: Zieler, Brady.
Some of these kids are looking good for the future. Think Possebon, like Fabio, should be in the 1st team sqaud a bit more.
