I attended a FFA refs meeting on Wednesday night and we were shown the FIFA ref directives for the WC.
The usual things have been highlighted to watch out for, simulation, calling the off- sides with the benefit of any doubt going the attackers way, etc, but the one that is the hot topic is clamping down on dissent.
This is nothing new really, but it will be interesting to see how it's interpreted (zero tolerance for verbal or non-verbal dissent). Assistants are being told to let the ref know if they see anything behind play too (e.g. muttering, hand waving, gestures, etc).
I doubt whether any ref would have the balls to give a 2nd yellow to a player for muttering obscenities, but you never know!

They should. If the players see it is being clamped down on and could mean missing a vital game then they will stop. Either that or they will get booked/sent off and miss out.
It time they started getting tougher on it all to clamp down on the shit being thrown their way. The first ref to do so deserves a medal for it

While I agree entirely, we all know there will be some spineless Mike Riley type who will let some big name charlie walk all over him and the whole thing goes to pot. I'd love for refs to actually band together and consistantly clamp down on all that crap, and if it means sending off players in massive games, then so be it.

They will never send-off a big name player as human beings have this ability to question everything in life, so the same goes for football. It is human nature, and I don't see the likes of Ribery or Rooney changing what has become natural for them both.

As a ref I'd love to see dissent totally stamped out as it's insidious and can totally spoil a game. Realistically though, I know it's not going to happen and luckily I'm thick-skinned (some would say just "thick!") and I don't let it get to me (at least not after I've blown the final whistle!)
I experimented once though in an Under 21's game and told the teams in my pre-game talk that I wouldn't tolerate any form of dissent and that the warning had been given. Bad move! It didn't stop the buggers from whinging and whining and of course, to keep face, I had to act each time. At one stage I thought I'd be sending off so many players I'd have to abandon the match!
Anyway, be interesting to see what happens from Friday night in S.A!

I heard on the news that the Brazilian Referee for the England game had been handed a dossier on the most common swear words used by Premiership Players...and if he hears them he must book them...
It bet its a belter! --- booker prize winner in the making!
On a more serious note, this surely means FIFA must translate into all the different languages, every swear word in the world thus not to be racist and say ''only english swear words will be given a yellow'' therefore I summise that that story was nothing short of a bowl of shit.

I know a few classics in sign language (deaf lingo) that I could pass on, although they do tend to be a bit obvious!

I like how they focus on one thing to really try and fix at time. I mean, diving has hardly gone away but apparently that's not as important anymore.
How about FIFA start asking referees to get the big decisions right, then maybe people will have less to "dissent" about.
EDIT: To be fair, it's only really the English ref's who consistently make glaring errors. Other mistakes happen, but 3 yellows = a red for god's sake. Doesn't exactly reflect well on the English game, does it?

The only way I can see the standard of refereeing improve is if more people actively want to become refs so they can set the bar higher. This is never going to happen with the level of abuse they currently get.
Simplest solution IMO is to follow rugby's ruling that only team captains be allowed to remonstrate with the officials. Any other player gets a booking. All these fair play/dissent rules are too ambiguous and no-one knows where they stand. Consistency is normally the main issue and making the guidelines easier to follow is the quickest way to this.
Zero tolerance would ruin the game though. If an official gets a decision blatantly wrong and a player says to himself, (all be it out loud,) something along these lines: "Fucking wally needs some glasses." And a non-English speaking linesman within earshot only understands the "effing", then there's no way he should be booked in my eyes.
I'm also interested in what you guys think about managers in this. Fergie's regularly been seen to bollock the 4th Official. What do you think should happen then?

^^ Manager's lead the team, rants like Fergie's should be penalised because it spreads onto the field.

it seems that the refs are being taught 20 or so english swear words and players using them are to be cautioned....
so its cool to swear in all other languages is it? surely the refs would have to learn all swear words in all languages for it to be fair?
smacks of unfairness to me.
i do except that some languages dont have equivelent swear words and some not at all, but for them to clamp down on just english ones is extremely unfair and smacks some more of FIFA/UEFA anti english-ism.
you know what i say to them? fuck off you arrogant cunt twat fuck faced bastard tit cock arsehole prick knobhead dickhead wankers.
ill take a yellow for that.
