Wolves have signed Roger Johnson on a four-year contract after agreeing an undisclosed fee with Birmingham.
Sky Sports sources reported on Tuesday evening that the centre-back was set to move to Molineux after successfully completing a medical.
Johnson, 28, who helped Birmingham to Carling Cup glory before being relegated from the Premier League last season, has since agreed personal terms and returned to Wolves' Compton training ground on Wednesday morning to sign his contract.
The defender becomes Mick McCarthy's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Jamie O'Haraand Dorus De Vries, and Wolves insist he has been a target for several years.
"We tried to sign Roger two years ago when he moved from Cardiff to Birmingham and have been tracking him ever since," chief executive officer Jez Moxey told the club's official website.
"We are pleased to have signed what we believe to be an excellent player who represents good value for money for us.
"He fits the bill perfectly - a British centre-back in his prime, one with Premier League and cup-winning experience, a vocal, determined, leader type who has played consistently well for a long time.
Value for money
"We stressed that we would not rush to do deals this summer and would have to be patient in the pursuit of our targets, which has proved to be beneficial for us."
Reports have suggested that Birmingham, having decided against Matt Mills, who has joined Leicester from Reading, will pay Birmingham a fee of £7million.
But Moxey is adamant this is an exaggeration, as he said: "As soon as Birmingham were relegated we started negotiations and these went on for a long time but it got to a stage where we looked like we might not be able to sign him.
"At that point we started talking to Reading about Matt Mills.
"But it soon became apparent to us that Matt Mills was unlikely to represent the value for money player we wanted.
"There was also a lot of misinformation in the press about the money we were supposedly offering - we only made one formal bid and the figures quoted were exaggerated.
"Likewise, while we are sticking to our policy that all transfer fees agreed remain undisclosed, the reports concerning the deal with Birmingham are also inaccurate."

Fulham have completed the signing of Norwegian defender John Arne Riise from Roma.
As exclusively revealed by skysports.com last week, Fulham have made a move to bring the former Liverpool defender back to the Premier League.
Fulham boss Martin Jol had made a new left-back one of his top priorities, with Mexican defender Carlos Salcido expected to leave Craven Cottage as he is homesick.
Riise, who will link up with his brother, Bjorn Helge, at Craven Cottage, was pleased to make the move to Fulham.
I'm delighted to have completed my transfer to Fulham this morning and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League once again," Riise told the club's official website.
"Fulham is a club that I have been following as my brother, Bjorn, plays here and he speaks very highly of the club and the staff. Obviously I also played against the club in the Europa league group stage when they went on to reach the final of the competition.
Ambitious
"I know that the club is ambitious, and continues to make good progress each year, under the guidance of the chairman Mohamed Al Fayed. I am looking forward to working with Martin Jol and the rest of the squad when I report to training next week."
Jol believes the 30-year-old will prove a valuable addition to the squad at Craven Cottage.
"John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me," said Jol.
"He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country, and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.
"I am extremely happy that we've been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress."

Queens Park Rangers have announced the signing of former Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd on a free transfer.
As revealed by skysports.com on Monday, QPR were on the verge of signing the England international after Bothroyd underwent a medical at Loftus Road.
Bothroyd has now signed a three-year deal at the Premier League new-boys after passing the medical and agreeing personal terms.
The 28-year-old was available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Cardiff earlier this summer.
Bothroyd is QPR's first signing of the summer as they prepare for life back in the top flight and the former Arsenal man admitted Neil Warnock played a big part in his decision to move to QPR.
I spoke to the manager and he told me how much he wanted me," Bothroyd told the club's official website.
"He convinced me that this was the right place to be.
"He told me the direction that he wants to go in and the way he wants to play.
"I think this club is heading in the right direction and has got a lot of ambition."
Warnock was delighted to finally get his man after beating off interest from a number of clubs to land the forward.
"In bringing Jay in, we have managed to secure an excellent player which augers well for the forthcoming campaign," said Warnock.
"We have been chasing him for a number of weeks and it has been frustrating at times.
"We have had to have a lot of patience with this but, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait.
"We are now working hard to add another new face to the squad and we hope to have that done very soon."

Leicester City have completed the signing of full-back Paul Konchesky from Liverpool on a three-year contract.
The move brings to an end an unhappy year at Anfield for the defender in which he was criticised for his performances and was loaned to Nottingham Forest.
Konchesky was a signing of former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, who had previously worked with him at Fulham, but he did not feature in the plans of Kenny Dalglish.
Sven Goran Eriksson, though, is delighted to have signed a player who he selected for an England debut against Australia in February 2003 before picking him for the Three Lions once more for a friendly against Argentina two years later.
Having completed a medical, Konchesky is now set to join Leicester on their pre-season tour of Sweden, and Eriksson said: "Paul has been a Premier League player year in and year out throughout his career so he represents a very big signing for us.
"He wanted to come to Leicester City and it means a lot that proven, established top-flight footballers want to be part of what we are building here.
"I know Paul very well as a player and as a person and he will be a top-class addition to our squad."
Liverpool had confirmed they were set to sell Konchesky in a statement on their official website earlier on Wednesday morning.
It read: "Liverpool have today finalised a deal to sell Paul Konchesky to Leicester City.
"The 30-year-old, who played 18 games for the Reds, will now join the Championship outfit for pre-season."
