When he drops a ball or misses one people jump on his back so when he gets it right and pulls off a tidy stop he deserves praise whether they are routine or not. The good should outweigh the bad not the other way around. Credit where it's due he dealt with everything best he could, can't fault the lad. Can't take blame for either goal so he couldn't have done anymore right.

Still drove me mental to see him flailing about, reaching out to punch the bloody thing. But at least he's coming, with what seems to be some semblence of confidence, and getting a hand to the ball.
Baby steps. And stopped us doing a 'vs. Spurs' i. e. getting ourselves back in the game only to concede again.

Agree with Paul. There seems to be an imbalance when it comes to praise and criticism with DDG. Not having a pop at the individual poster but describing his saves as "routine" is a case in point. The save from the header is only routine because he is a quite brilliant shot stopper and makes that look easy. It isn't easy in anyway shape or form. But people seem to just gloss over that and say he still flapped at some crosses. If you are going to criticse fine obviously you are entitled to, but at least for the sake of balance praise properly rather than through gritted teeth. This also happened in the game against the Renters. Some pointed fingers at him for not saving Mata's freekick but barely mentioned the absolute world class save from Torres's header.

He's absolutely one of the best shot stoppers I've seen. That's not in doubt for me.
To be fair he may punch a lot but he gets a lot of distance on his punches most of the time. I'm fine with him punching as long as he actually gets it, which he does mostly.

BTW, Joe "best keeper in the league" has just had another howler but it's barely mentioned by Sky.

I agree with you Tommy, if De Gea is getting good distance on his punches which means he's effectively clearing the ball away from danger, then it's not an issue. Some fans seem to think he's obligated to catch the ball, that's not necessarily the case. It's up to De Gea to judge what he feels is the best action to take under the particular circumstances he faces when the ball is being delivered into the box.

If you read my post I said the punches were routine, nothing about his saves. No one would have been banging on about those punches if it hadn't of been De Gea. I do agree that it is good to see him hopefully gaining some confidence in commanding his box. He made some good saves.

I'm a big DDG fan. But I'd like to see stats that show what percentage of his punches actually go straight to the opposition (whereas a straight catch would have retained possession.)

Being perfectly honest I am quite ok with his punches turning out like that for now. He does not have the physique or confidence yet to go up and catch the ball cleanly. Much rather a punch out of the box as he did on all three occasions Saturday then... lets say a flap, confusion, and something in the nature of the Vidic own goal earlier in the year. As someone said babysteps, Ive always been critical of him but that is true progress IMO.
