Michael Carrick is close to agreeing a one-year contract extension with Manchester United after holding encouraging talks with the executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. Carrick’s contract is due to expire at the end of next month, but José Mourinho wants the 35-year-old to remain at the club for a 12th season. The midfielder turns 36 in July, but the United manager values his experience and is satisfied that he is still good enough to play top-flight football. He has started 30 matches this season. Carrick’s representatives held talks with Woodward after the EFL Cup final at the end of February and further discussions have been described as “positive”. The England international hopes to sign his new deal next month, when his testimonial is due to take place at Old Trafford. Carrick has played 461 times for United since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in an £18.6 million deal in July 2006. He is in line to start his fifth consecutive Premier League game this evening when United play away to Southampton as Paul Pogba has been granted compassionate leave after the death of his father. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/7c4ae254-3a61-11e7-a451-ead20c30db3d

I don't mind him getting a new contract as long as next season is the season he starts to be really faded out of the team and we are no longer having to rely on him.. it would be good to have him about dressing room.. I think mourinho see's that as one of his assists as opposed to only playing

Word is its a Player/U23 coach contract, which would suggest he is purely a backup player.

Well. Honestly don't know what to make of that. Simple really. Giggs' lasting legacy is apparently to teach formerly-useful, now-finished players to hang around long after they are actually worth a place a 25 man squad. Because that's what you have to look at. The squad is a maximum of 25 over 21s. Is it seriously being suggested that there are no players in the world of football who could give us more than Michael Carrick? Tielemans has 18 goals and 15 assists this season. Carrick? 1 and 1. What is the fucking point.
