Carrick renewal is only a positive. He is never going to demand to be a starter, nor is he going to steal stratospheric wages. Adds to experience. And together with Schweinsteiger, can total to a proper midfielder. i don't see any great passer being available in the market. Could have been Pjanic but he seems to be going to Turin.

Good move by Jose ... To many senior figures leaving can have a serious negative effect , Carrick still has something to offer the club even if it's a lesser playing role and more influential off the pitch .

Delighted for Carrick. 10 years with us. 5 titles and Champions league. The lad has done something right. Bit part player on the field next season but vital in the dressing room. Win Win all round.

There's a serious chance he'll retire after holding the PL title. He deserves no less.

Carrick to score the winner in the EL Final Against Sevilla It's funny that by now the immediate assumption is that Sevilla will be there

Carrick to score the winner in the EL Final Against Sevilla Do you know, I can't remember a single winner Carrick has scored for us. A number of important goals (Wigan, European Cup final penalty) but no match winners.

I think this new contract makes sense. He's still a quality squad player. I don't think its wise to get rid of every old head. Its pretty stupid actually.

Didn't you just answer your own question?! Yeah, I didn't really make that clear. I remember he scored, and we won 2-1, but never remember that he scored the goal that made it 2-1. The strike is fixed, the importance isn't. I don't know why.

Not sure we should have re signed him. Doesn't hurt though I suppose.

I get why we're keeping him for another year and obviously it's good news, I just feel Schweinsteiger might be gone because of this.
In terms of what he can offer on the field and off it, at 31, I'd have preferred Bastian.
I know Carrick has experience in England and he's been at the club longer etcetera, but I genuinely think Bastian can offer more (when fit obviously).
I'm a fan of Carrick, but there were ample occasions this season where you could see he's not the player he used to be, touch has gone a bit and his distribution doesn't have the same metronomic accuracy anymore.
That said, maybe we'll keep around two experienced midfielders and Schweinteiger stays as well, who knows?

maybe its just me but I didn't see a lot of the incisive forward passing from him that we used to see. might be injuries or just him following LVG's instructions, I won't put it down to age as his vision and passing range should really still be there.
Him signing and bastian staying can work, but the key and only key is them having legs on either side of them. in a 2 (4231) I hink they will get exposed but in a 3 (433) with their intelligence and passing range they can conserve energy, dictate the game and still look good. they need legs on either side to do the running for them, bail them out sometimes when the opposition are moving at 100mph. morgan for this very reason should stay and can be very very effective, he has a good engine for the box to box stuff, and dear I say it tfm would be dynamite alongside either one as he is so powerful and has so much energy. the experienced heads in carrick or bastian would guide him perfectly.

I'm giving all our CMs a free pass from last year. Stew lets say we go with that bar fellaini who personally I want sold. we have bastian, carrick, morgan, Herrera, tfm hopefully can get added to the mix and fair to say although we don't like him rooney. without one being sold will we actually get a midfielder?
