Ashley Cole has never been the best left-back in the world. Second-best a lot, yes, but never the best. Lol you do make me laugh at times. He's consistently been the best left back in the world for the last few years - his performances in the CL this year yet again outlined this. Lahm and Evra of a couple of years ago are the only real players that have gotten close to him. When they all play to the best of their ability there isn't much between them, says a lot though when you struggle to find a game when Ronaldo wasn't largely silenced by Cole. Oh, I can think of quite a few games Ronaldo ran Cashley ragged. Early on, yes, Ronnie struggled against him but once Ronaldo pushed on to that extra level Cole couldn't get near him. 3-0 at Old Trafford in 2009 springs immediately to mind. Evra was the best LB in the world from around 2007-2009/2010, Lahm was the best in the interim and Coentrao is the best right now. Chivu was bloody unbelievable for Inter during the '09/'10 season. Cole isn't the best now and hasn't been in the past. Arguable? Maybe, but there has always been at least one or two players who edge it.

When you're comparing the top two or three of anything, there's bound to be differences of opinion. There are a lot of grey areas. To say one player is definitely better than another is wrong. Especially when different leagues are involved.
On Alba - He strikes me as more of a winger. Wouldn't cut it as a defender in any other side. Barca is perfect for him.

Evra was the best LB in the world from around 2007-2009/2010 I find that statement virtually impossible to disagree with.

Neither can I, I've always thought it's been between him and Cole, it just seems Evra's form seems to have dipped whereas Cole's hasn't. I think Marcelo is going to be one of the best for years to come, has improved considerably over the last couple of seasons.

I already had a rant in the Summer Signings thread about the jurno who brought this story up in the first place so i'm not going to go on another wobbler!!
No chance of this happening, pick your reason.
Cole's attitude for instance, self-explanatory. Fergie wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot barge pole.

Doesn't mean we can create a thread to discuss what a tool Cole is, does it? If anything that journo has done us a favour! Great excuse to call Cashley a twat...... Cashley's a twat.

I wouldn't even want Ashley Cole if Chelsea offered him for free plus £5m.
Poisonous little shit.

As i said, i had a rant in the other thread at how ridiculous this connection to Cole is. They need to fill the column inches in the Sunday newspaper. Cole to United, that'll shift newspapers. Laughable.

I don't know. Fergie may well be interested. Baines is obviously going to be more expensive than originally hoped, so maybe Fergie is looking at Cole. Chelsea are getting rid of a lot of the old guard, and he's in the last year of his contract. Sure, he is a bit of a twat, but we've had our fair share down the years.
You say age counts against him, but perhaps his age is ideal. Fergie might think that having him and Evra for a few more years may just give Fabio a chance to develop before throwing him in. Or another target may become available in the mean time.
