not as interesting as the other advice threads but thanks in advance anyway the gist of it is that my mid-long term career plan is going to require me to have a degree. a degree in psychology. i'm then going to need to specialise in further areas that are going to need further study. i'm considering both attending a uni or studying at home through open uni. this is the dilemma i'm wrestling with. if i get accepted for 2013 entry i'll be starting a degree and living a bit of a student life at 30 years old. i'm not worried about 30g's of debt [stupid as it sounds] more that i'd struggle with student life, and that i won't have much company of a similar age. if i go the open uni route i'll need to leave it a few years until i'm a bit more stable with money, discipline etc. worry here is that i'll possibly need to do it part time over 6 years, when i could get it done in half the time by actually attending. again this degree isn't optional it's going to be necessary. wondering what anyone else would do in my situation - cheers boys.

Considering the length of time Id go for the attending option mate. Age wont mean fuck all and I bet youll find it a lot easier than you think. The debt is a problem like but your going to have that no matter what, Would you save that much if you did the open uni? obviously taking into consideration because its twice as long itll probably cost you a shit load anyway.
Good luck with it though mate, Me myself id get it over and done with the sooner I could, but as you say theres arguments for both sides so would really say either 1 is right or wrong to go for.

I'm looking at going back to uni myself. Graduated in '08 with a history degree but I want to go back and do a PGCE. Just applied for it. I'm not worried at all about being a "mature" student, although I am a baby-faced 27 year old.
I say go to uni. Which ones would you be looking at? Apply to Reading! Then I'll be your beer drinking, Utd mad uni mate.

You must have a fucking PhD in Scouse-Bashing, surely? In fact, you teach that course, don't you? Head of Department, I'd guess?

paul is the doctor of scouse bashing no doubt.
if i went down this route traff i'd apply anywhere really. i'd consider reading defo. i applied for entry this year at chichester and portsmouth but they won't budge on my maths and science GCSE scores and won't have me. a uni/college in london did accept me but i declined becase it seemed pretty shabby.
how long is a PGCE? i'm pretty intrigued how you will make this work since did you not get married recently? assuming you have rent/mortgage to pay for etc.
cheers guys

You single?
If yes, just go to Uni, you'll love it. This is serious advice by the way, I'm not just 'being a big lad'. Uni is awesome.

Age is literally just a number at Uni, seriously jim.
It will definitely put much of the spunk back in your system and you might come out of it with a completely new set of interests, in fact, with a psychology degree that's a given. Plus, you'll likely meet a load of new people, there are always people slightly older than the rest and really, at Uni, age matters little. I'll be about 26/27 when I finish my degree and, without exception, being at Uni is something most people look back on as the best time of their life.
Steady on, grind when you need to and finish it at Uni properly man, you won't regret it. One's never too "old" to do a fucking thing.

Sept to June. If I get a place on the course, there's no doubt about it - it'll be a horrific year for me and the (new) wife financially. But we have a little savings account and she currently earns more than I do anyway so hopefully we might just be able to wing it. I've wanted to be a teacher since before I graduated so I owe it to myself to try, God knows I've waited long enough. Like you, not too worried about the debt. The fees will just be added to my student loan balance that I'm already paying off. Like Besto says - uni is the bomb. I wasn't your typical "lad" either, out getting smashed all night and chasing tail. Most nights I was actually staying in, playing guitar, watching 24. And playing for the uni football team too which was epic. But still an amazing three years.
