Very mature performance today Mengi was stunning at the back and even nabbed a cheeky goal. He has a very bright future IMO.

Exclusive: Man Utd Set to Sunderland's 16-Year-Old Defender Logan Pye Ahead of Rivals Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Sunderland defender Logan Pye, with the 16-year-old currently in the north west to discuss personal terms with the club. Pye's spent his entire youth career with the Black Cats, making 13 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League where he's played as a full-back or higher up the pitch in attack, and has already broken into England's Under-16 side. His performances with Sunderland's youth teams have attracted serious interest from the Premier League's biggest clubs. 90min can reveal that it's Manchester United who are set to complete the signing of Pye, who's one of the most sought after young defenders in English football. Sunderland have given permission for Pye to talk with Manchester United and he's currently in the north west to talk about personal terms. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City had all enquired about Pye's availability but the 16-year-old is now closest to joining United. Both Arsenal and Manchester United were also interested in signing the defender before the start of the season but they were forced to wait at least till Pye turned 16 in October. Pye can play centrally as well as his natural position as a full-back, while the youngster has featured three times in midfield in the Premier League's Under-18 division. He's scored his only goal for Sunderland at that level in a 6-1 defeat to West Brom, while he set up Josh Baggs' opener in September's Tyne-Wear derby. www.90min.com/posts/6541738-exclusive-man-utd-set-to-sunderland-s-16-year-old-defender-logan-pye-ahead-of-rivals?utm_source=RSS

Meet Hannibal Mejbri, the 17-year-old Manchester United starlet who cost £9.3m and wants to emulate Eric Cantona Paul Hirst Friday February 07 2020, 12.01am, The Times
Most accounts of Manchester United’s transfer dealings last summer detail three major multimillion-pound signings, but that does not tell the whole truth.
Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James were not the only big-money transfers who joined United. There was the little-known Frenchman Hannibal Mejbri too. Despite being 16, Mejbri was so highly rated that United had to commit to a deal worth €10 million (£9.3 million at the time) to sign him from Monaco in August. United gave Monaco half up front and the rest will be paid to the Ligue 1 club in instalments.
That Jorge Mendes, the super agent who counts Cristiano Ronaldo among his client list, flew into Manchester to broker the deal, demonstrated the significance of the transfer. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in Mejbri, who spoke of emulating some of the greatest Frenchmen ever to play at Old Trafford after he signed. “There is of course [Paul] Pogba,” he said. “In terms of the older ones, [Eric] Cantona. When I went to Manchester, all that people would talk to me about was him.”
Having such lofty ambitions is admirable, of course, but words mean little if you cannot perform on the pitch. Mejbri, however, is showing signs that he is the real deal. On Wednesday night the United Under-18 captain and playmaker came through his toughest physical and psychological test as United overcame Leeds United 1-0 in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup at Old Trafford. A crowd of 4,263 turned up, 1,400 of whom were Leeds fans.
Mejbri’s slight frame makes him an easy target for those who are more physically developed in his age group and his long Afro hair sometimes leads to taunts from opposition fans. Normally that is not a problem when he is playing in front of tiny crowds at Leigh Sports Village or at Carrington, but given that it was Leeds’s first visit to Old Trafford in a decade, the away fans were in good voice and targeted Mejbri from the off. Twice within the space of the opening ten minutes, Mejbri, now 17, was sent tumbling after robust challenges from Niklas Haugland — who the teenager had nutmegged — and Charlie Cresswell. The Leeds fans accused Mejbri of play-acting and taunted him by comparing him to a Simpsons character known for his wild hair. “Sideshow Bob is f***ing shit” was their chant.
Mejbri was not the only talent on show — Teden Mengi, the United centre back, was outstanding, as was midfielder Mark Helm and goalscorer Dillon Hoogwerf — but he certainly looked the most comfortable on the ball. Mejbri, whose parents came over from Monaco with him last summer, sat behind Hoogwerf, the striker, and picked holes for him to exploit. Mejbri’s balance was exceptional, as was his range of passing. “He comes with a high reputation,” Neil Ryan, the United Under-18 coach, said. “He’s a good player, a lovely character who is working very hard and like every young kid in the club, is still learning. We are seeing some really positive things from him on the pitch.”
United’s youngsters are taught not to rise to taunts from opposition fans and players. Mejbri still has some way to go in this respect. At one point he goaded the Leeds fans in the corner of the stadium and yesterday morning he mocked them by posting a picture of Sideshow Bob on his Instagram feed.
“He is a talented boy and like all good players he will get targeted by any opposition,” said Ryan, son of the former United assistant manager Jimmy Ryan. “That is what he has to learn, how to channel and focus his energies and not to get caught up in that, and I thought he did that well.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the United manager, was at the match, in which Leeds were reduced to ten men after Henri Kumwenda’s red card. Solskjaer has high hopes for Mejbri and many others in the under-18s.
Ryan’s team face Wigan Athletic, who count Jamie Carragher’s son James among their ranks, in the quarter-finals. Ryan hopes the match, which has to be played before the end of the month, will be staged at Old Trafford rather than at Leigh, the rugby league ground where the under-23s play, and it is easy to see why. The experience of stepping out on to the Old Trafford turf is a valuable one in the players’ development, especially if the away crowd is as raucous as the Leeds contingent. “It is a new thing for us, being at Old Trafford with a big crowd and it’s a good experience,” Reece Devine, United’s 18-year-old full back, said.
United’s present crop are following a path trodden by some of the club’s greatest players from the Busby Babes to the Class of 92. United last lifted the trophy nine years ago, though, when Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison beat a Sheffield United team containing Harry Maguire in the final.
In each of the ten United teams to have won the FA Youth Cup, at least one player has gone on to make 50 first-team appearances.
The nine-year barren patch is a concern to some — especially as Chelsea are just one short of United’s record tally — but those inside the club point out that United’s first-team squad now contains Marcus Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, Scott McTominay, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams, who all came through the academy.
“There are a lot of players who have won it here and I would like to follow in their footsteps,” Mejbri said.
