Story in the Mirror (yeah, I know) that we are after him: www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-transfer-news-oscar-1470036?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterManchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is back on the trail of Athletic Bilbao midfield dynamo Oscar de Marcos. Ferguson sent brother Martin, his top European scout, to watch de Marcos against Barcelona as he re-opens his file on the dynamic 23-year-old who dazzled against the Reds last season. De Marcos was wanted by United in the summer but his high valuation - £25million at the time - put Fergie off the deal and he ploughed his cash into signing Robin van Persie. Now Ferguson is looking for fresh midfield legs again, with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs coming towards the end of their careers, and Bilbao may lower the price on de Marcos after a poor season. The Europa League finalists of six months ago have been strugglers in La Liga this season and many stars are eyeing the exit door at the Basque club. United would still have to find around £20m for de Marcos, but his appeal is big - especially as he could be eligible for the Champions League if he was bought in next month's window. De Marcos has been likened to Roy Keane in his hard-running and committed style and he has qualities that the current United squad lack. ------------- Our type of signing, young and maybe cheaper than expected. If he's anything like Royston then yes please, pretty please.

Will he limit/see the end of Scholes and Giggs? Yes? Very interested then In all fairness limiting their game time is the least of the worries, much rather concentrate on improving conceding goals.

Is he a defender? No? Not interested then I understand we conceded a few goals from set pieces and crosses against Reading, but a lot of the goals we have conceded this season have come from the midfield leaving the defense exposed. Signing a midfielder who will track back and put his foot in will definitely help.

Every midfielder we are linked with (and they are many) are generally the next Scholes / Keane / Giggs / Robson / (insert name of legendary United midfielder here)...
Pisses me off as
a)we are unlikely to sign them b) if we do they are under immediate pressure to be one of the above....

To be honest, any midfielder we're interested in being labelled as the next Scholes etc, will more than likely happen.
People are always going to make comparisons, be it media, fans or whoever. Comes with the territory to a certain degree.
It's probably wrong to do it, and you do make a valid point regarding the player in question being under pressure. I'm sure players know they're going to be under pressure to perform for United when they sign for us in the first place.
