I have to say I take little or no joy in Arsenal's struggles. They were the one opponent over the years that I actually respected. A proper club, built by good managers in Graham and Wenger without spending obscene amounts of money a la City and Chelsea. It does look like his time there might be coming to an end but he and his Arsenal teams were at the very least worthy opponents.

Glad to see the back of them. Always felt they got away with a LOT more crap than we ever would, I know that goes for every club but when Arsenal were at the top around 98 - 04 they should have been receiving the same abuse we would get for the shit they pulled.
I'm thinking their obscene disciplinary record.
I'm thinking Vieira leaping up and spitting at Ruddock.
I'm thinking Keown's monkey antics at RVN.
I'm thinking Henry having to be held back from physically attacking Poll.
I'm thinking Wenger getting into actual fights with managers as soon as his team is losing (Pardew, Joll)
I'm thinking their shit house fans who don't think Wenger should get any kind of abuse from rival fans (and I agree the paedo thing is bang out of order) but seem to think it's perfectly ok to mock the holocaust when they play Spurs.
Look at the level of shit we got for the players ganning up on D'Urso, Arsenal have done worse and it's nothing like the same reaction from other fans or the press. I don't care when clubs like Wigan or whoever don't receive the attention, but when it's someone the size and power of Arsenal (as they were 10 years ago)? Bollocks, they should be strung up like we are.
Good riddance to the most over rated manager I've ever seen (anyone else noticed he's won nothing since the last of the players he inherited left the club? With Adams, Bergkamp, Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Parlour, Keown playing he was winning trophies, since they left, nothing)

Still much prefer them to Chelsea or City.
As to Wenger and his signings- you left out the likes of Viera from Milans reserves and Henry an ineffective winger transformed into one of the best strikers in world football, a teenage Anelka to name but 3. His failure has been to think he could keep re-producing team after team with young players in the new footballing landscape. He didn't react to Chelsea and City they way Utd and Fergie did. Doesn't mean his achievements are lessened. And they played good football.

The fuss over his early signings was over stated as well in my opinion.
He was French, of course he knew how good Vieira and Anelka were. No body in Europe knew how good Rooney was at 16, but everyone involved in English football did because everyone was talking about him. Same goes for Joe Cole, or Owen.
If Ferguson had gone to manage Madrid and signed a 16 year old Owen or Rooney before they'd made their debut's, the reaction would naturally have been "Who?" But they would have had the same instant impact and Ferguson would have been held up as some sort of genius for "spotting" this talent. No, it's just everyone was talking about these kids before they'd played a game, but only in England. So of course we didn't know anything about a 17 year old kid named Anelka, but equally of course that the Frenchman Wenger would have known all about him, and Vieira.
Edit:
And I'll grant him that he's signed some great players on the cheap, but the whole 'Not spending big money' thing has only come about since about 05, or coincidentally since they stopped winning trophies. Before that he spent a fair amount of cash, Overmars, Vieira, Ljundberg, Kanu, Henry, Wiltord, Reyes, Pires, Jeffers, Wright, there's about 75 million just at that lot in the space of maybe 6 years, not counting the numerous other players he signed in the same time. He did raise money by selling, namely Overmars and Petit to Barca and Anelka to Real, but do you think if Fergie had spent 100 million after selling Ronaldo people wouldn't be all over it as proof of how much he spends? Why the double standard over Wenger?

I agree with Stew and Jim. I've got a lot of respect for Arsenal now, although I hated them back when they were good. If we can't win the league, I'd like for the gooners to win it.

Dazjoe, what I actually said was "without spending obscene amounts of money a la City and Chelsea." Of course Arsenal spent cash, but not to the extent the plastics did. And while Wenger may have known about the French kids, he was the only one that gave them a chance. Viera was rotting in the Milan reserves before Wenger signed him. We all know how good he turned out to be. Milan obviously didn't.
Anyway, if, if FFP were to be properly implemented (fat chance) then by most experts reckoning the two clubs that would benefit he most are Utd and Arsenal. The problem is that it won't be. This transfer window in jan will be very revealing. If the likes of City and the Rents go huge again (Falcao to Chelsea for example) then you know it's just words.

Of all the young English/British talent you could have mentioned in the same breath as Wayne Rooney or Michael Owen, you picked Joe Cole? It did make me laugh mind you. Never will there be another Keane v Viera rivalry so I do miss it. However this is a pisstake thread so im obliged to go... HA. Perhaps the biggest pisstake is that we are not taking the piss Paul. Maybe it is that Arsenal have fallen so far and so dramatically, that they no longer even warrant our distain and abuse. Instead they are only good for our pity and casual reminiscing of more fractious times. I agree with Stew and Jim. I've got a lot of respect for Arsenal now, although I hated them back when they were good. If we can't win the league, I'd like for the gooners to win it. Two words: Piers Morgan. But really, apart from Morgan and that fat cunt from my school way back when, I understand where you're all coming from. Arsenal, as much as I hated them when they were seriously challenging us every season, in retrospect are probably the only "honourable" club to have consistently gone toe-to-toe with us since or dominance began. Blackburn were not only a one-off, but built on Jack Walker's millions. They were Chelsea and city before Roman and the Sheiks gave a damn about football. FFP should, in a perfect implementation, pave the way for us vs. Arsenal and maybe Spurs being the main title competition into the 2020s. Unfortunately, we all don't expect the FFP to have any real affect at all.

Wengers main problem is that he's blinkered by previous 'finds' and refuses to spend any money on players

Thing is whinger has to take a large portion of the blame. People blame the board but hes signed countless players that have flopped instead of spending on talent.
@ bestie - They have and will continue to drop. Wenger turned arsenal into a title winning team but hes failed to deliver for 7 years now as much of a legend to the game as he is a club of that level its simply nt good enough. Wenger has passed his sell by date.
What does iritate me and its not just aimed at arsenal becoz we have them aswell and thats when the going gets tough they want the managers head on a plate. Like that bellend on twitter that burnt their arsenal shirt. I Despise these types of fans. Should be either 100% behind a team or nothing at all.

I would have more sympathy for them if they weren't so self-riotous. I miss the old duels between Wenger and Fergie, Keane Vieira, RVN v that ape Keown, the Nevilles v Reyes, but every time I find myself wanting them to do better I have Arsenal fans and the media bleat on about how they play the best football or have the best stadium etc.

Unfortunately, we all don't expect the FFP to have any real affect at all. I know! He's crap now, but I was thinking of players that had received hype before they'd made their debut, and I remember a lot of talk about this incredible kid West Ham had. It's just something that's always bugged me, when people go on about how he found this unknown kid and made him so good. I'm sure there was as much talk in France about Anelka as there was in England about Owen (using him as it was around the same time they came through). You can imagine all the coaches and managers would have been aware PSG has this wonderkid in their youth ranks, so of course Wenger would have known about him, just like all the coaches and managers over here knew Liverpool had a special kid coming through their system. Same with Vieira, yes he was in the reserves at Milan, but he'd come through the system in France, he was clearly a special talent, good enough for AC Milan to buy him lets remember, and Wenger knew all about him. It wasn't 'genius' it was buying a player everyone in your country knew was class.
