Take it to your local Sony store or any electronics outlet they should be able to help you out.

Is the xbox really that good. I don't do online gaming so would an xbox be wasted on me? Or are they much better on campaign games?

if you're not interested in teaming up with mates [or joining a clan] and playing online then yeah it's prob not for you, unless there are xbox exclusive games you particularly want.
you should give online gaming a go, especially if you like shooters or are good at racers

Have you tried holding down on the power button till it *beeps*? Don't think I can help much, but hope it will be fixed soon for your sake!
PS. If you're into online gaming, I'd purchase a good computer instead and connect a x-box controller to play with. I own a PS3, but I prefer using my computer 95% of the time.

Could be worse, you could have fixed it just now and then had a power cut

update and a bit of advice
Do not take anything to be repaired to pc world/know how team as they have fucked my console right up.Basically a straight forward repair has been so botched that the console is ruined this was found out after pcworld told me the part "was no longer available" i then found a place in bolton who only does consoles and he could not believe how bad the attempt was to repair it. Trading standards are now getting involved.Don't take anything there because they "knownowt".

Why on earth did you take it to PC world?

It was actually a phone call to Sony which lead me to taking it there they said that certain high street retailers were offering a repair service.believe me i wished i had never heard of PC world.
