They weren't kings, they were meant to be wise men (Magi) weren't they? Depends on interpretation. Besides, they most probably weren't black. They probably had "brownish" (or bronze?) skin, as most had (and have) in the East end of ancient Mesopotamia or the Mediterranean.
Btw, I would like to point out that people could care less if you were black, white, brown, yellow or green (ok, maybe not green) during the Roman times. We've "evolved" so much since then... obviously.
