Why do we need a defender again? Unless he's a left-back. (Which I didn't think he is?)

talk of arsenal buying him to replace sagna He's a CB. Not really needed but then again we've been linked with Hummels a lot so maybe we are still on the lookout for a young CB.

Don't need a CB eh?
Vidic needs some serious cotton wool treatment to get him back - and even then its not looking good. Rio could be gone in the summer too. That leaves 3 CB's. We definitly need one in the summer!

Sorry. I meant, we don't need that centre back.

Wasn't saying that we should get Yanga Mbwa, just that we will probably need a CB. I'd prefer Hummels, but i'd say he will cost a fortune.

We paid a fortune for Rio so we should be able to do the same again if required....

Got this guy in FIFA and he's pretty much the best CB in the world in 2015 - If he's available for a decent price then I say go for it. If we never have to see Carrick at CB it'll be too soon and we all know how religiously our CB meltdown comes around.
But alas, Hummels would be everyone's wet dream on here - the obvious choice to replace Vida in the long term.

We definitly need one in the summer! If Vida is still struggling for full fitness and / or Rio does go by this summer, then yeah, we should go for a CB. But if both stays and are relatively fit, then I'd rather us spend somewhere else TBH.

I'd rather we bring in a CB asap to take over when time eventually catches up to Rio and Vida, in essence, it's a certainty that one, or both, will be gone in 2-3 years.
Rather than having to panic-buy, having to pay top dollar as everyone knows we're desperate, get a quality CB in asap and phase him in. Don't want a repeat of trying to replace Stam.
That said, whether Jones, Smalling, Evans, Keane and Wooton will make up a solid partnership between them remains to be seen.

JEvans + One of Smalling, Keane or Wootton works for me, as long as Wootton shows he has the extra edge needed for a United CB. I reckon we could actually do with an established older CB to fill the gap between JEvans and Smalling to Keane and Wootton. As an example, rather than a suggestion, a Jagielka sort but with European Cup experience. Around 28/29/30 age, knows what he is doing, see us through until we know about Keane and Wootton. Then make a move for Hummels/A. N. Other if we have to in a season or two.
Unless of course Hummels is targeted by other clubs before then. In that case we go get him.

I think it's going to be Smalling and Evans out of them lot, I still think Smalling out of all our CB's will be one of the best in the world in two or three years. Evans will be up there as well if he continues to progress like he has.

Smalling is going to be a fantastic defender!
And to think he was only playing non-league football not long ago
