I think it's going to be Smalling and Evans out of them lot, I still think Smalling out of all our CB's will be one of the best in the world in two or three years. Evans will be up there as well if he continues to progress like he has. Sorry. I didn't mean JEvans -- Smalling wouldn't be automatic first choice mate, I meant that when we need to rotate, I'd have JEvans as the anchor and Smalling rotated for one of the other two.

if Smalling continues to progress he'll be first choice. excellent footballing center half, tall and wins headers.
I think Smalling/Jones has massive potential. Evans is also a good center half as we know. I'd say it depends on the course Jonesy's career takes from here on in, 1) because we aren't certain where he'll play and 2) because he worries me slightly that he puts his body on the line and always seems to hurt himself

Smalling is suspect on corners and set-pieces, I've noticed recently. And again, I've said it before, to suggest JEvans won't be our first choice CB for now and the future is comepletely disrespectful to his performances in the last two years. He is our best centre-back until Vidic gets back fully. I don't know why you have this Smalling -- Jones thing in your head jim? They've hardly played together at CB for us. Jonesy should end up in midfield anyway, could be such a complete player it'd be a shame to see him 'wasted' at centre-back.

i'm not disrespecting Evans, he's defo been our best center back for a while now. I've never been an Evans basher
Smalling is going to be a real top quality player. Jones has massive potential, and i think both are potentially on another level to Evans. That's why i keep on about that particular partnership.
That doesn't leave Evans out of the picture. He's clearly got a big future at the club. And i can't rule out Jones playing in midfield like you say, but he looks less like a midfielder and more like a center half to me. I don't think he'd be wasted there, the modern center half isn't what it was. look at the likes of Pique, carries the ball forward like Jones will.

i do agree with jim that their potential is on another level from evans, i think if they will be the future for us. with Jones as much as i want him in midfield i feel his desire to play at centerback will see him play there long term. evans is a talent no doubt but i see him as the third CB if those two are fit. smalling hs always impressed me immmensely, strong good in the air and fast, he will get better and better

I don't think Jones has got the ball playing ability to play in midfield. I think Smalling and Evans will the long term partnership but then again there is still talk of our interest in Hummels and other CB's so who knows what'll mean if we do bring in someone else.
One thing for sure though, I don't think anybody ever imagined Evans turning out this good when we look back at his performances two years ago.

Eh, excuse me? Thanks, I'll take the credit there. I defended Jonny to the hilt.

Also, what exactly has Smalling done that has indicated he's going to be on this 'different level' to Jonny Evans. Played more in the last two seasons? No. Been more consistent in that time? No. Been our most important defender in Vidic's absence?
Seriously, where is this coming from, please?

Here's a hand grenade for ya- Jones will be the best Centre Half in England in a couple of years time and will also be Utd's captain.

Pretty sure i was defending Evans too. Along with Carrick, De Gea, Rafael and pretty much every player that has been written off by large sections of our support. All this talk of favouring expensive signings is even more baffling considering we barely have

Coz he cost £10mill. Some board members seem to favour expensive signings over young lads who've come through the ranks, and know what it is to be a United player. i could care less about the price, for me i see a more composed player in smalling, i see a player who would be ablt to handle a fast attacker with skill and trickery, and also is strong enough to handle those with aerial and physical threats. evans is a very good player and will get better as they all will but for me smalling is the one that will partner jones. patrice evra, vidic, rio, van der saar, big pete, irwin, keano just to name some, they didnt come through the ranks and they all know what it is to be a united player. and to be honest knowing and being good enough is 2 different things what we want is players that are good enough. this is in no way implying evans is not good enough, as he has shown he is more than capable to mix with the best
