This was the World Cup that finally got me into football once and for all. I was 15.
It also meant finally deciding which part of Manchester I was going to nail my colours to.
Bryan Robson made that decision this tournament for me despite his injury.
I know 1990 was the one most people remember fondly but 86 was my personal favourite.

Really sad news ,a truly wonderful player, loved his attitude, and how he didn’t give a flying fuck, think Italia ‘90 in Naples when more Italians were supporting him than their national side.

There’s a really pathetic group of people who are still mad at Maradona for the Hand of God. They opened the ITV news questioning whether he was a hero or a cheat (based purely on the Hand of God, not factoring in the drugs test). Well, his other goal against England was so good it should have counted as three goals on its own.
A sensational player and a maverick of a man. The kind of footballing personality that they just don’t make any more. Something very fitting about him leaving us on the same day that Best did. Rest in Peace.

There’s a great documentary on him somewhere focusing on his time in Naples and his friendship with some of the local Ndrangheta mafia, the lad didn’t give a damn, good on him too! Argentina announces three days’ of national mourning.

Imagine if Dave came out to punch a ball clear in an empty penalty area and got beaten to it by someone two feet shorter than him. The lack of athleticism shown by Shilton is arguably more criminal than anything Diego did in his whole life. The daft arse still won’t let it go either.

Shilton was comfortably catching that until the little druggie cheat punched it in. If anyone is getting blamed for that goal it’s Hodge and whatever the fuck he was doing on that clearance.

The fan poll on SSN had Messi rated above him. That staggered me.

I mean i think it’s a lot different if you actually lived through and remember the Maradona years. Goes without saying that’s he’s arguably the most talented footballer I have ever seen but his antics on and off the pitch were a disgrace at times and his behavior in his later years was embarrassing. An enigma? Sure absolutely but that doesn’t offset some of the shit he did. I mean he was banned for drugs then sent home from a World Cup after failing another drug test, he shot at journalists, tax evasion, links to organised crime syndicates, made a racist gesture at a journalist in 2018..... could go on. A footballing genius but he was a wretched Human being.
