I’ve always found it bizarre. Any other nation would quite rightly be blaming Shilton for that goal. Imagine if Dave came out to punch a ball clear in an empty penalty area and got beaten to it by someone two feet shorter than him. The lack of athleticism shown by Shilton is arguably more criminal than anything Diego did in his whole life. The daft arse still won’t let it go either. Shilton was comfortably catching that until the little druggie cheat punched it in. If anyone is getting blamed for that goal it’s Hodge and whatever the fuck he was doing on that clearance. Shilton was coming to punch it, he wasn’t trying to catch it at all. Shilton got England knocked out of two World Cups, that’s why he won’t shut up about the Hand of God. He’s embarrassed.

Shilton was an average keeper. Just think it’s pushing it to say it was his fault. The guy fucking punched it over him lol. Genuinely never heard anyone blaming Shilton for that goal until now. That being said the Hand of god goal was probably the least offensive thing Maradona did in his career.

He leapt for it like a pensioner and got beaten in the air by the smallest man on the pitch.

If you mean at that point, then yeah he was, he was 36 by then and not the 'keeper he had been, and certainly shouldn't have still been England's number one 4 years later. But if you mean throughout his career? He really, really wasn't. In his peak years Shilton was an outstanding 'keeper. Ray Clemence was bloody good and generally kept out of the England team by Shilton, which tells you a lot. But agree on the Maradona goal, just come and claim the ball; clean Maradona out if you have to, 'keepers could literally get away with murder in those days anyway.

I mean i think it’s a lot different if you actually lived through and remember the Maradona years. Goes without saying that’s he’s arguably the most talented footballer I have ever seen but his antics on and off the pitch were a disgrace at times and his behavior in his later years was embarrassing. An enigma? Sure absolutely but that doesn’t offset some of the shit he did. I mean he was banned for drugs then sent home from a World Cup after failing another drug test, he shot at journalists, tax evasion, links to organised crime syndicates, made a racist gesture at a journalist in 2018..... could go on. A footballing genius but he was a wretched Human being. I think immediately after he's passed isn't the best time to bring this up. Not saying you're wrong. But the timing is questionable..

All Diego did was save England from the pain of losing to Germany on penalties in the final. I’ve always found it bizarre. Any other nation would quite rightly be blaming Shilton for that goal. I have being saying this for years, but people just don't seem to get it.

Yes apologies i was referring to 86. He started making more and more mistakes after he left Forest imo. I guess Gary Bailey wasn’t a great option either though in fairness to the 86 team.

Listened to Hoddle and Lineker talking about '86 today.
Both commented on just how bad the pitch was at the Azteca that game. Shockingly bad, and the turf would move under your feet. Both talked about just how ridiculous that goal was, not just how good it was anyway, on any pitch in the world, but to do in on that pitch, was inhuman.
It's something I've often talked about when comparing the likes of Best or Maradona, to Messi and Ronaldo. I'm not taking anything anyway from either of those two, they are supreme players. But Maradona, and even more so Best, played in era's where defenders could literally look to end your career and get away with it; brutal, knee high, studs up tackles were the norm. And the pitches were often little more than quagmires, swamps covered in sand. Imagine either of those two players playing today, on the surfaces we have, pretty much a no contact sport now.

Was thinking about this myself. A lot of players of the past you look at and think “no way could he have played now”. But Best and Maradona particularly would’ve been even better now. Better pitches, less contact, better coaching, sports science, nutrition etc.

Fair point I suppose Just in the immediate aftermath of his passing mate . We'll have enough time to talk about the rest of him. For now, we could appreciate his genius for a bit..

Papa Bouba Diop has died, aged 42. 2020 is just horrible. R.I.P.

Paolo Rossi has died. RIP Before my time, but I’ve always found the story of his exploits in that famous World Cup fascinating. RIP.

Paolo Rossi has died. RIP What a display that was against Brazil in 1982. Just struck me how similar his third goal was to one of Teddy Sheringham's, which was practically scored across the street from there 17 years later...
