Think there was an ambulance on the pitch because a fan had been hit by a flare too! How the hell was he allowed to run that distance with the flag. Top botch security there. Good job the ambulance was there.

Ngl, not arsed about Pele. Was too young to see him play, and he doesn’t have the club or cultural connection that George Best had, for example.

Kids were pretending to be him for decades etc. his name itself became an adjective. I remember trying to do his dummy past the keeper for years in school.

Yeh early 70's so quite a bit older I think based on your player choices. So that makes sense.

Not saying Pele isn’t iconic or wasn’t a phenomenal footballer, I just have no romance with him, like I would with say Denis Law, Bobby Charlton etc etc.

Yeah agree with many sentiments here. Obviously sad to hear a legend of the game has passed away but hard to feel any real loss for a player i have no personal attachment to and never saw play.
As for the playground it was all about Becks for me!

Reading this and thinking everyone here is just a kid, must be teenagers if they were pretending to be Del Piero or Beckham playing school football. Then realising that those players were playing 20 years ago so people aged 30 grew up with them. Time eh?
For me, same as 99.9% of other kids brought up in 80's England, it was Robson.
In his autobiography even Gerrard admitted he once wore a United shirt.
“A mate of mine owned this Robson top, the old blue-and-white one with dashes on it,” he wrote.
“We were kicking about on Ironside [the appropriately named road he grew up on] and I asked him whether I could be Robson for a while.
“I slipped out of my Liverpool shirt, and put the Robson one on.
“It felt fantastic.
“I wore it for an hour, charging all over, flying into tackles, scoring brave goals, pretending I was Robson.
“Because the shirt had Robson’s name on it, I forgot about the United bit.
“I didn’t seem like treachery to Liverpool, more homage to an England god.
“Unfortunately, dad looked out the window and went ballistic,” he continued.
“‘Get inside now!’ he screamed. Scarcely through the door, I ran into a right good grilling.
“‘What the hell are you playing at, wearing a Manchester United shirt?’ he asked.
“‘But dad, it’s Bryan Robson’s shirt,’ I explained.
“Dad couldn’t have cared less. ‘You should know better,’ he said.

It was Robbo for me as well. I'm a United fan because of Bryan Robson. A huge part of that generation were robbo fans. Alot of guys in there 50s would say he was the complete midfielder and I can only take there word for it. That's the thing about Peles death, to a specific generation players like Pele were idolised but I do think his generation were real pioneers, players like Pele were to football what Elvis was to Rock N Roll, they brought football into the modern age and paved the way for the great players to come. Pele inspired an entire generation of Brazilian players, especially those incredible teams of the 80s and they subsequently inspired that talent pool of the 90s. The roots of Brazilian football very much start with players like Pele. That's an incredible legacy and one worth celebrating.

I even think he's underrated by the club and by a lot of our own fans below a certain age. If he was 10 years younger and in his prime during the early PL era he would be seen as a god and have a statue. To think he was as good as he was in spite of the injuries and drinking is astonishing.
