It would be daft to be happy to pay £26mill for him but not increase it to £30m. If we actually do this then we as fans need to demand answers. Indeed, I mean I don't like to throw off accusations when we've very little evidence about the inner workings, but if we don't bother it would be ridiculous. The bid is confirmed and unlike with Cesc he has an obtainable release clause only a fraction over it. Judging from Bilbao statement they would seem ok if we did pay that much and wouldn't try to fuck us over. The bid is just to close to the release to not bother, I would seriously question why we wouldn't have followed up. The only excuse would be a to its complex deal, which would question why leave it this late. Sill as I said Bayern set a precedent, though technically a re-affirmation of the Ronaldo (fat) deal in 2002. Hopefully if we offer the release Bilbao would just accept it.

There are all sorts of tax complications, that Bayern had to go through too, hence why 'just paying the release clause' isn't that simple.
Complications that could see the final figure being close to 55mill....

I think that's why there was talk of us offering slightly more than the release clause, to smooth this along. Sid Lowe mentioned it I'm pretty sure.

Complications that could see the final figure being close to 55mill.... No it really isn't. Bayern did not pay any additional tax, in the end. Sure that dragged out some time and involved the Spanish tax office making a ruling but no additional tax was paid. Bayern passed the money to Martinez to buyout his contract, but they had already made a ruling stating it was a business transaction, not earnings, so income tax was never involved. Anyone saying we'd have to pay more taxes/extra's simple hasnt read/didnt understand what happened last year. Now I'm not expert, but for me that's a case of setting a precedent which would affect this deal and Bilbao should know that.

Sounds like we'd have benefitted from making this move with, you know, more than a day left in the window...

Don't know this player, apparently he played against us in Europe, left no impression on me. Is he mobile? Or we settling and overspending on an Arteta quality player or are we getting a future Spain starter?

He was superb in both legs, ran us ragged. Not that it matters, we won't sign him.

We bid around 28, the release clause is 31. If he isn't holding a United shirt tomorrow next to Moyes woodward should be shot! Because that would show woody and the glazers are just fucking around, thinking the fans are dumb...
