Depression Central. 4th will be tough now. Liverpool look better than us and unless the situation improves dramatically, we could be done. I don't trust this team to go on a run long enough to put us in a healthy position. Hopefully Matas signing will lift the team enough to help us cross that line. If Mata effect on us >= the Ozil effect on Arsenal, then standing @ end of season = 4 or better.

The greatest tragedy isn't that we're not doing any business today, it's that we never spent the gap between the end of the last window and the start of this one lining up some deals. Our business should have concluded on the 1st of this month with some signings that we'd previously thrashed out. When Mata became available, he should have been a wonderful bonus to add to the players we'd already signed (to play in the positions we desperately need reinforcing) this month. As it stands we've signed a wonderful player, but one who plays in a position we're not short of quality in. We're now left praying that Fletcher can play every single week and that the big Belgian will somehow magically adapt to the team and be brilliant upon his return. He's put a lot of eggs in the basket of Rooney and RVP. He's took a gamble that if they stay fit, their goals, aided by Mata, will win us games regardless of how many we concede on any given day. Problem is we've been playing shite all season and have very seldom looked like bagging a lot of goals regardless of who we've had on the pitch. I somehow feel that things are falling in place, apart from the Kagawa puzzle. - RvP & Rooney getting back. - Adnan has brilliantly adapted into the main XI - Signing of the 'Juan' we wanted. - Fella getting back to full fitness at a time when MC is out for a long period. Lets give him a fair run & I feel he might be the answer to our midfield woes, giving the likes of Fletch/Clevers/Powell to play further ahead and link up with the frontmen. Open issues are 1) A classy LB. 2) A world class CM. I don't think a CB is a top priority as IMO Evans, Jones and Smalling are the future of the defense and lets give them a long rope LB & CM issues will be resolved in the summer window (don't know to what extent). Ed & DM are more experienced and hopefully will be wiser by the next window. Rebuilding is still on and I have not given up hope.

I have bit my tongue for the last six month but feel its time to vent my spleen about what seems to be happening with my beloved club. After 25 years of being a season ticket holder I gave my tickets up 3 years ago after a number of run ins with the club about tickets and various other annoyances and I generally felt the club had changed since the Gimps had taken control. To you that still go week in and week out I take my hat off to you especially this year when let's face it we have been shit.
Firstly the new manager . I am not convinced at all but will reserve judgement . I personally feel if we are to continue to be one of the top 4 or 5 teams in Europe we needed a top proven manager not only one who is a big enough draw to attract the players but also one who has a winning mentality , a track record of success and is tactically aware especially in Europe. Why as a massive club / business would you go for someone who has won nowt.
I am concerned that he has turned a premiership winning side into a side which will be lucky to qualify for Europe whilst his successor at Everton seems to have improved and pushed them on. He seems to have upset a good number of key players including van Persie and has ditched most of the back room staff which fergie advised him not to do. He also seems to have pissed Evra off , who whilst he has some defensive frailties is still a good left back and would do for a few years whilst we strengthen in other areas.
Now to the team , due to the lack of investment in the team for years we are now left with a squad that needs some major surgery, this is the owners fault full stop. When other teams in Europe and domestically have strengthened we have not. We are now left with the following areas that need strengthening and this is not slagging off what we have , some are legends and have given great service despite a few lapses over the years but it is hard to remember a drugs test and that the rule is don't shag your brothers wife.
Centre back one too old the other injury prone , right back not good enough and cover not good enough. Left back unhappy and leaving. Centre midfield , Giggs too old ginger prince gone and gaping hole to be filled at least one probably two recruits needed.
Wingers , competition needed, get rid of Nani , teach Valencia how to cross and Young I feel deserves a chance but for god sake drive a bit slower will you.
Centre forwards , Rooney sign a contract or piss off make your mind up. Van Persie pull us out of the shit stop pretending to be injured and get us into fourth place and if you don't like the new manager leave !
We also need to stop trying to buy players off Barca , Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, they will string us along not sell and most of the time we are being used by the player to get a better contract. Concentrate on the best players in the second string teams and whats wrong with picking up some squad players from the lower leagues or some youngsters.
Also when you want a player don't piss around and offer a derisory sum play hard ball and get them.
I personally think the future looks bleak , one big signing this window to appease the fans and take the pressure off Moyes. Why all the scouting and no signings, looks to me as if someone has not got the money to spend and is spending all their time trying to look busy. Moyes has just been quoted as saying the existing players deserved a chance. Well they have had one, we are in 7th and probably out of Europe next year.
Big spend in summer ? My arse just wait for next summers excuses ... Prices too high because of World Cup .. Players all away on World Cup duty... No value in the market...
I hate to say it but things look bad ... Saying that we will probably go on a 15 game unbeaten run and make me look a complete tosser
Spleen vented

Fantastic! All sarcasm aside, what is our actual transfer policy? The first team players aren't good enough so we bin off the youth side? Our worst players play left back, on the wing and in central midfield so we sell the backup left back, winger and a central midfielder? One of our few talented players plays #10, so we buy another #10 but won't play them together? Surely somebody at the club has thought this through, so seriously, can somebody explain the plan here? There isn't one. Reus, who is a fantastic player, is now being talked about as our main summer target. Brilliant, can't have enough world class players, particularly those with real pace. However, if this is at the expense of signing a centre mid of left back then it's just bonkers. Get Kroos/Gundogan and then move on to Reus.

From moyes bugging up the mata, Rooney rvp trio it may seem he will go 433 as he believes they are all intelligent to interchange. On form adnan on the bench makes no sense, will they use him in center mid as an attacking mid? To be fair if they can rotate him and kagawa (has to learn other positions and should be able to with his intelligence) in the iniesta role with carrick/fellaini and fletcher/cleverley we may fare better. Rooney/welbeck mata/young rvp/Hernandez

Why was Moyes desperate for a left back in the summer? By the end of the winter transfer window, we've still signed no left back but let one go? Not much make sense about our transfer policy so far. The summer feels like ages away now. Even that will be another last minute jobbie again. We are still the worst team in the world for transfers. The Mata one was a one off. Hats off to that one. Agree, he also states he is not disappointed with the way transfers have gone.... yet he never achieved his Baines target... the Euro jolly came to nothing as well... all a bit strange....

I made the mistake 18 months ago of worrying if the signing of a world class player, who wasn't of the position we necessarily wanted, would be enough to make a difference. So I'm going to see how that plays out. If Mata's signing leads to less of Tony V, we're doing it right.
I didn't really expect a lot in January, hoped for 2 signings but expected 1. As Moyes warned even in Dec, sometimes the clubs will just be unwilling to sell. Pretty sure that's what happened with Coentrao, Madrid couldn't find a second LB and so would rather not get caught short than take the money a few months earlier. Throwing a few more mill at them wouldn't change that.
Moyes has spoken boldly though. Lots of suggestions that players are coming, we just couldn't get them here in January. They certainly have no excuses for summer. Now its over to Moyes to get us 4th, that will involve us having to be consistent for the first time as well as some big game performances.

Agree, and Im waiting to see what he does with these so called WC players. Its great getting Mata but put him in goal and well, you get my point. If we do actually get 4 or 5 more class players will Moyes be able to use them correctly... Interested to see how Moyes plays this out with Mata over the next 15 games, that will indicate some what on his mind set...

Depression Central. 4th will be tough now. Liverpool look better than us and unless the situation improves dramatically, we could be done. If Mata effect on us >= the Ozil effect on Arsenal, then standing @ end of season = 4 or better. That's a big IF.

If we are looking to the reserves/ youths to fix midfield then Powell is the only one that is physically ready. Pearson and particularly Perreria will be bit are both kids and need to go down the loan route. Powell is the one. Problem I have with Powell at Wigan is that he is being developed by them in the wrong position for us; he is regularly getting game time, but as a deep lying stiker, I wouldn't even call it borderline AM, he is their main goal threat so they stick him up front where the ball is played up to him meaning he isn't getting the time on the ball to develop creatively as a midfielder, or even an attacking mid. Good points but the plan has always been for him to play for us in a similar way to Lampard. Moyes is obviously happy for him to be played more forward for Wigan. I hope this doesn't mean he'll be seen a player in the hole, we have too many of those. When he comes back next year he should just be played as a midfielder with a license to get forward. It's time. No more Giggs in there if we ever want to get moving on fixing the bloody problem.

_ - -Excellent points, surprising that those were almost the same points being discussed with on another place between myself and another person on the Sun's comments section-- would you be him The reason being is -- This is like Pool under Hodgson why. 1. After the summer nonsense Deadwood came out and said the actual outlay was only 40M and that we had used it to sign MF an are that needed strengthening , Varela and Zaha and Extended Nani's contract while keeping in Rooney and that in itself was a big achievement. 2. Winning doesn't matter as long as we can keep selling shirts since crisps and ketchup stain won;t show that much on a red shirt (even if its a tablecloth). 3. Pool under Hodgson was pisspoor and couldn't stand a chance even under lower league teams - similar to how we are unable to against Swansea, Sunderland, Cardiff , WBA ... 4. The manager couldn't get any style into the game except hoof ball and a distinct hope while claiming how good the fans are and how the team is gelling and yada yada yada-- we hear that all time. 5. Pool - Hodgson- Fulham , United - Moyes - Everton , hopefully to England - Moyes , bye bye. 6. We got Mata just like RvP cos it was a one off and it was fluke. There has been a very distinct pattern to our scouting and transfers, players refusing to sign contract extensions, or on last year, wanting to leave , knock down transfer prices from what otherwise would be huge fee. The only way we will get 2-3 players is either they are dirt cheap or are all under 15-20 mil or we will end up with 1 big and 1 squad player 7. DM's statement in his interview first up that it'd take him at least 3 years to get his own team in place. I hold no dream that we will have a massive influx of teams cos there has been little to no evidence of this huge war chest that we keep hearing about, Unless there are swap deals or some nonsensical fees for Ando, Nani and whomever else we sell. Its a shame but it how it will be for next year or two IMO. There was a man who was no flop with very little he could shop and make a team that would top he goes by the name of Jurgen... that's the man we should have got. Well onto tonight's game and hopefully some Mata and Persie magic

Our u18's have just lost 2-0 to those classless arabs at home. Less than a week ago our u21's lost to them as well. I don't see these fuckers going away any time soon.
