I don't remember this being an issue when John Barnes was scoring wonder-goals vs Brazil. That's the problem, England are unbelievably shite and they are trying to pins their hopes on a 18 year old that has only just made his debut. Says it all really. People are trying to justify the argument that residency is a valid reason for playing for a country which I think is complete bollocks. Residency should never come into it. Maybe that's why English people leave to play in other countries in the hope that they have a choice to play for someone decent. Odd comment. Surely English players leave England less than just about any other nation on the planet.

Apparently Giggs would have been eligible for England these days because he was educated in England for 5 years under 18. Why didn't they have this rule 20 years ago?

I think everyone agrees the "standard principle" in theory for any player choosing whichever country he wishes to play for should be that:
1) Be eligible according to the law and rules to play for the country in the first place i.e. 5 years of permanent residency for the UK. 2) Genuinely feels that the country in question is his home, and has the desire to declare and serve his country as so.
To be fair to Wilshere the lad, he states this more clearly in his twitter when asked.

Meh, half the England cricket team is made up of my kinsman and I'm not complaining. At least not anymore

Giggs never eligible for England 'proper'. He played for the Schoolboy levels because of where he went to school (Manchester). He could never have played for any 'offical' junior or senior England team.

Berti Vogts approached Rooney when he was a youngster to try and get him to play for Scotland. Surprised he said no I would of thought Rooney would of loved being Scotlands only hope, would of been good for his massive ego.

Speaking seriously now, if anyone takes what Jack Wilshire has to say about National team eligibility for anything other than an attempt to have some sort of misguided, ill informed opinion of something that is beyond his mental capacity then so be it. This is Jack Wilshire. Since when did anyone give a flying fuck about what he has to say about anything.

What are the laws in England about citizenship? The right to vote etc? Once you meet those you should be able to play football for the country. As Tatty said, when Barnes scored, no one cared. When Pieterson scores an ashes century was anyone complaining? If Messi had left his country for England and was now eligible do you think Jack would mind? Would he shite.
