Alot of talk today about Wilshires comments that have got everyone's knickers in a twist today, just in case you've missed it he has said that only English men should play for England in response to questions about our new boy wonder. Now I will say I agree with the point he made regarding players who've been here for 5 years qualifying to play for England, it is ridiculous. It really is cheating the system when you see Brazlians playing for some eastern european team after a few years. Is Wilshire right or is it the realities of the world we live in?.

As i'm Irish, i obviously think Wilshire is talking bollocks!!
Plenty of 'English men' in our squads over the years through mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, great-....you get it...
Pint of Guinness at Dublin Airport and you can play? Join up, don't care if you're from Croydon. lol.

I agree and disagree. This has all come about because of Januzaj. I think residency should have no part in playing for another country, it should be by either nationality of birth or relative nationality. Might I add huge praise to Frankie Boyle for making Wilshite look like a prize berk.

To be fair to wilshire, he's talking about people who've been in the country 5 minutes playing for England. For example, Eduardo playing for Croatia, that kind of situation.

Yeh obviously if its a case of a player seeking asylum because of war, genocide etc then you obviously allow them to play for their adopted country, but if they move over as a young adult then it's unfair to allow them to be picked up by the adopted country. Protects some of the smaller countries as well as the integrity of international football.

I think it should be Citizenship. I'm a dual Citizen so i don't see why i couldn't pick between the two. If you move to a Country to play football & decide that it's the place for you then why not? I think you have to wait 3 years in most Country's to get Citizenship anyway.

wilshere's having a shocker of a season from what I've seen of him. best bet would be to pipe down and find his form.

Makes me laugh though, it's like a vice versa kinda thing.
Before - Wilshite was the be all and end all of Arsenal's midfield and people couldn't stand Ramsey questioning what does he actually bring to the table.
Now - Ramsey all of a sudden is scoring a few goals and playing better now people are questioning Wilshite's ability.
Fuck me Arsenal fans are fickle. This should also give us a bit of advice aswell regarding the Moyes and Fellaini threads. DON'T fucking be like them. Get behind our own (with the exception of a few that have proved time and time again they just aint good enough).

i wouldn't question wilshere's ability. but his recent form hasn't been good. running into players, losing the ball and holding his ankle. [knee/head/body part of choice]
you're right, ramsey is having a good season so far.
wonder if united, while arsenal sport their ramsey/ozil sized hard ons, could steal in and take wilshere while his stock is on the slide.. nope, probably not.

I'm not questiong it myself, I think he's a decent player, just the way the Arsenal fans turn on their manager or players at the drop of a hat then all of a sudden are up their arses make me rather humoured.

He scored last weekend. Meh, they always had a good midfield. It seems that the acquisition of a £42m player / Ozil perked up their spirits for their players that they aren't broke or lackadaisical. Hopefully, when they meet with the next difficult stop, they will bottle as they usually did.

I don't remember this being an issue when John Barnes was scoring wonder-goals vs Brazil.

I think most people, especially the media know the point he was attempting to make, even if he was clumsy in making it. And that was regarding the cynical attitude towards nationality in modern football. The attitude that has seen Brazilians playing for Japan, Croatia, Ukraine, Spain, etc. based on a relatively short residency period. At least the majority of foreign born players that have played for England have either a heritage link to the country or have spent their formative years onwards here.

I don't remember this being an issue when John Barnes was scoring wonder-goals vs Brazil. That's the problem, England are unbelievably shite and they are trying to pins their hopes on a 18 year old that has only just made his debut. Says it all really. People are trying to justify the argument that residency is a valid reason for playing for a country which I think is complete bollocks. Residency should never come into it. Maybe that's why English people leave to play in other countries in the hope that they have a choice to play for someone decent.
