His contract has run out today. Doesn't sound like it will be renewed. Thanks for everything Juan, you were one of the few things giving me hope during the club's darkest hours.

I read it was being renewed. His time is well and truly up and we should let him go, but out of all the ridiculous contracts we have offered players who we should have let go over the last few years, Jones matic ect, a mental 3 year deal for Mata wouldn't actually bother me.

we wanted him to take an 80k a week paycut to £100k a week to stay. I don't think he would get that money anywhere else at his age tbh. Deal doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me unless the thought process is matic defo leaving and Mata can provide experience.
Surely you let him go nicely and start blooding Hannibal properly, we spent 10 million on the lad as a literal child, why the heck are we not just giving him mata's game time to further develop

This is why we will struggle to to become an elite side again.
We just hang on to players well past their sell by date and for 100k a week we could definitely have upgraded on him
City have just released Aguero and will no doubt upgrade on him this summer(if he’d played for us he’d be here for another 5 years at least)

I really like mata but for fucks sake why do we give players new contracts who aren't going to play. Is It an accounting thing . Is he in the books as a 20 million pound asset and letting him go leaves a financial hole. It just doesn't make any sense

It's this kind of thing that has me OK with Mata staying on longer. On the pitch he should really be used massively sparingly (league cup, early rounds of the FA Cup if we get favourable draws, final game of the Champions League group stage if already qualified for next round for instance), but you'd hope that off the pitch he is a huge, positive influence for the young lads. Rashford is already a fabulous individual himself, but you have the likes of Greenwood, Shoretire, Elanga, Amad, etc. Surely it helps them to develop as people in positions of incredible wealth and privilege to have Mata as a mentor and role model. On the pitch yes, but also off it. These kids aren't growing up to be regular Joe's; they will be millionaires, with legions of hangers on, yes men, and false friends. Learning how to navigate through that isn't easy and hopefully a guy like Mata can only help.

Literally wasted his talent and career because we’re such a basket case of a club.
But, we’ll always have Juanfield.
