I have been really impressed with Smalling of late. I would have himself and Jones as the partnership of choice going forward.

Against Stoke he was steady enough, then a stupid mistake when trying to clear the ball and it goes straight to a Stoke player 5 yards away. For me though, the worst things about him is when he has the ball, never have I seen someone so uncomfortable on it.

Now that we know Vidic is going, I'd wish we go with JEvans -- Jones as much as possible with Smalling filling in for either depending. Let Fletch be the battler in midfield and build a back three ('Keeper and CB's) for the future from right now in our biggest matches. I know, no chance. What is this witchcraft?

Im gutted that Vida will be leaving us this summer. This leaves us facing the possibility that we will need to replace both our Captain and Vice Captain.
This is a potential golden opportunity for DD however. This allows him the opportunity to truly stamp his authority on the team by bringing in senior players that (should) play in the way that he wants his teams to play, and can be called 'his' players, players that have no SAF reference point from which to compare Moyes.
equally, should the summer pass and no major improvement in personnel occur, i think we will be watching a dead man walking come next season, as i doubt the current crop sans Vida, Rio, Evra (all leaders in the team) will have the character to mount a serious challenge on the title, especially with such an uninspiring manager on the sidelines.
This coming summer really is looking to be a major one for us. i think it will dictate the direction the club is headed in under the current management.

We let Shawcross go because we had Rio, Vidic, Jones and Pique. It was only a year later Pique said he wanted to go. I think if Fergie had known Pique was off earlier, we'd probs still have Shawcross. We didn't have Jones.. Jones only been here 2 years right? Shawcross went 2008 He meant Evans. Almost 98% sure of it. We had O'Shea and Wes Brown as well back then, so we had more than enough cover for the CB position. I can understand why Shawcross chose to leave, considering the opposition he faced at the time.

Smalling is a clumsy Rio. Will be a steady eddy and reliable back up. Jones, on the other hand is rough but every time I see him screams potential world class. Evans is perennial scapegoat and is never good enough.

goodluck to vidic. smalling, jones and evans all need kick up the backside, this is a fantastic chance for them and they should play out of their skins to ensure new center back is not bought, if they can fulfill their potential and play to their bility then there should be no need to buy, a youngster can be promoted. evans and smalling are prone to lapses in concentration and jones really has to manage his body better, bravery does not mean stupidity, he can work on his timing and that will negate the need for injury tackles. these 3 are the future and on frm any combination is very good, i have seen smalling and jones for the england u21's a wile back and they really looked special together.

Evans is perennial scapegoat and is never good enough. Think that's harsh on Rio, especially as Rio was renowned in his hay day for being able to play with the ball, Smalling can do anything but that. Evans could just do with having a skin head and getting in the gym to become a bit stronger. He's probably been our most reliable centre back for the past couple of seasons, but I don't know, there's just something about him that doesn't fill me full of confidence. Either way, Moyes needs to sort out all this shit by the start of next season as it's been a long time since we've been able to use the same back four on a consistent basis, which is key.

Of course all our centre halves would look a lot better if they didn't have a wet paper bag protecting them.

Evans is good when he has someone like Vidic alongside him. Smalling is very inconsistent and his confidence drops rapidly when playing against a talented opponent. In a sense Evans, Smalling, Rio and Pally are all the same kind of players, gifted centre backs. Vidic, Stam, Bruce are the brawn, power and solidity in a defence. I don't think Jones can replace Vidic in temperament. Brave and all that but Jones can't lead with his head down all the time and his tendency to drift out of a game. We need a powerful player like Vidic with a lot of experience to inspire and rebuild the defence. We also need the same kind of powerhouse or engine room in the midfield. DD and Deadwood should now spend all their time and energy finding those two players.

I meant a clumsy version of Rio. If he played for any club, would have been hailed as one of England's best ever. Vida and Rio duo in their prime Hummels and Subotic is the closest you would get to those two. On Evans, yes he is a shade below world class but I have complete faith in him esp once we get an actual midfield. Remember our 13 game shut out?? Fletch had the season of his life and made the job of our CBs a whole lot easier.

Evans will be the ball playing partner.
