The Ballon D'Or is fucking stupid. Leaving aside arguments about rewarding individuals in a team game, it has so many problems. The main two are: 1. Timing. Why is it based on calendar years? None of the players play in countries where the domestic league is done in calendar years! Top level football is not measured in calendar years so neither should be top football awards. 2. Who is allowed to vote. What does the captain of Eritrea have to do with who is the best player in the world?! Over half the people voting will not have seen all 23 nominated players play more than twice. It leads to bizarre decisions like the Vanuatu captain having a 3 of Pogba, Muller, Alexis, or Stephan M'Bia going for Yaya Toure, Zlatan, Neuer. Then a ton just vote on reputation, leading to the exclusion on great players for past it ones (like Yaya). Even players that should be knowledgable such as Vincent Kompany vote for their mates - his 3 was Hazard, KDB, Messi. The award, like FIFA itself, needs serious reform. I like that the Ballon D'Or is done over a calander year. Otherwise it would just be another end of season award. Doing enough to be the best player in a calander year means you have to be brilliant (or play for Barca/be called Messi) spanning two football seasons, with a break in between. It's much better than the English Footballer of the Year awards, voted for in the middle of the season. I do think the voting system is moronic though.

What a fucking fix this Ballon D'or is. He's missed half the season through injury and he still gets it.
Fucking inch high cunt.

Though I will say that the voting in the middle of the season for PFA players is ridiculous, and I would have the Ballon D'Or have a very quick turnaround. Voting would be after the international tournament that summer and the award would be announced at the start of August.

What a fucking fix this Ballon D'or is. He's missed half the season through injury and he still gets it. Fucking inch high cunt. He still bagged 58 goals and won the CL for them with those performance against City and Munich in the semi final last season. What seems to be the problem other than your feel compelled to hate him. His peers voted for him. It wasn't an internet poll.

Most of his 'peers' that voted (and I'm not sure the journalist third of those voting are 'peers') are morons who will almost never watch the vast majority of those nominated play.

This "wanker" was just making an observation. Doesn't bother me who wins it. Would just be nice to see somebody else get credit they deserve for the work they put in.

I was reading a debate about the d'Or which was based on the winner is largely who everyones favorite is, regardless of how much they deserve it. How do players that aren't strikers get a look in at the moment?

IMO, like the Heisman Trophy, any award that is voted on by Journalists is unlikely to be awarded to the best footballer, it is going to be awarded to the player in the biggest media market(s) Votes from Coaches and players, I think, tend to be more "honest" but would be shaded to the side of players their clubs had competed againt, or in some cases, their own players. I know Universities here in the States start marketing players as candidates in spring practice. \

I was reading a debate about the d'Or which was based on the winner is largely who everyones favorite is, regardless of how much they deserve it. How do players that aren't strikers get a look in at the moment? Philipp Lahm's view on this and he really is spot on: First, I want to make it clear that Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar are fantastic footballers. It is beyond any question that they have rightfully reached the final shortlist numerous times. But I have asked myself: What is the voting for the best footballer of the world all about? Of course, it is an award for the best footballer of the year. That means it's all about the performances on the pitch and about the prizes won. Only a player who not only plays internationally, but who is successful on the biggest stage has the necessary relevance to stand a chance. There's nothing wrong with this formula. It makes sense that the player of the year is someone who is an international and competes in top club competitions. But when the voters are national coaches, national captains and a select group of journalists from 209 countries, I am convinced that only a few of these people, despite their knowledge, think about the topic. I have voted myself five times in the past and I don't exclude myself from acting in this way.I know the procedure. During the season you receive a message and you are asked to name three players from a list of candidates. And then you simply go for the obvious choices – which brings us back to Facebook. You are stuck with the best-known names - players who you immediately remember pictures or games of. Players who are everywhere, on and off the pitch. You vote for the 'most visible' players. That's why the Ballon d'Or has become a vote for the 'world's best striker'. That's not my embittered perspective as a defensive player but a neutral and statistically proven fact.Fabio Cannavaro is the only true defender to have won the Golden Ball. The unforgettable Lothar Matthaus won the title as a midfielder in 1991 and after him Zinedine Zidane three times, but Matthaus was much more offensive-minded. Both won it way before the real start of the digital age. Oliver Kahn and Manuel Neuer made the podium but no goalkeeper has ever won it [since Lev Yashin in 1963]. To cut a long story short: Only the players who score goals can be crowned the best footballer of the year. Of course, the moment when the ball hits the net, that's fascinating for kids playing the game and motivates them to join a club. Our sport needs lethal strikers, goalscorers, heroes. But football is much more than the moment of triumph. Football is teamwork, unity, defence, assists, sacrifice. I believe that when Fifa hands out an award, it should not be a marketing prize that solely honours the protagonists of a media-crazy sport. Maybe there shouldn't be an individual award in a team sport but (in addition to the world XI) four single awards for best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder and best striker instead. This is because I don't think you can have one person who is the world's best player. In 2015, Lionel Messi is the deserved winner for the award of the world's best striker. Congratulations, Lionel Messi!
