I'd have taken Cole tbh, Baines is good but Shaw is the future. Shaw won't play in Brazil so what's the point in putting Baines in when Cole would easily get through the WC.
Let's hope he drops lampard now.

I quite agree, Cole might be a massive cunty-twat but he's a good left back and his experience would of been useful

Utter prick with an ego beyond measure but in his prime was definitely one of the best left-backs in the world. I think he still has something to offer but the guy is 33 now, 34 in December, and with Luke Shaw coming on, Baines having another top quality season and Gibbs also having a decent one, I think it's probably right that he steps aside. He's also largely played second-fiddle to Azpilicueta this season.
Also I don't think England can truly get a fresh start until the old guard all move on. Gerrard and Lampard will likely retire from international football after this World Cup, Terry has already retired, COle has just stepped down, which just leaves Rooney, who has 2-4 more years probably. It's time for another generation to get massively over-hyped by the media and burdened with expectation completely outweighing their actual talents.

Fair enough,but a least Cole can still defend well.Evra gave up on defending about 3/4 seasons ago and has been a liability ever since.
