Anyone ever taken a holiday for several months, maybe a year? I've got an opportunity in the next couple of years to take a long period off. I've got a dog & a family, mortgage etc. Lots of different scenarios going through my head. Sort of like a late gap year.

It's how I came to Australia in the first place.
I had a mortgage and a cat, but no family. It was pretty easy to sell the house, give my cat to my mother and head off. Obviously you'd need to be very financially set up and presumably not be swanning around the world if you have a wife/girlfriend and kids.
I was 29 when I did it, best thing I did. Was pretty dissatisfied with life back home and needed something "extra" as it were. Had a bit of a panic as I approached 30 and realised that my time was running out if I wanted to get a working holiday visa (got to be 18-30).
It may be the old grass is always greener thing but I've loved being over here, often think if I hadn't decided to take the plunge where I'd be and what I'd be doing now. Didn't want to wake up one morning in my 50's and have a bag full of regrets about not travelling.
But having kids complicates things, big time.
