He is definitely better off the bench but he seems to score in nearly every game he plays so you can't really argue with that.

you could say in theory that ANY attacker is better off the bench against a trired defence, and unfortunately he's had more than his share of chances to make an impact off the bench and gain a supersub tag.
he's the one striker we've got who naturally leads the line and operates right up top. he's a completely different player to van Perse, waz and welbeck. it's for tactical reasons that he doesn't always start, not because he's more a threat off the bench - this is something of a myth.
he's a constant goal threat who doesn't give a defence a minutes peace, much more dangerous over 90 minutes than for 15 or 20. he's just pure quality, instant reactions, clinical finishing. seeing him sat on a bench feels so wrong

Well, he clearly isn't much more dangerous over 90 minutes than 15 or 20. How many games do you see him starting, not scoring, and being subbed off?
Plenty. On the other side, when he can come off the bench, against the worn defences, he scores almost on tap.

ask yourself this. when he starts games and doesn't score, do you look back at lots of fluffed chances? no. he's a predatory striker who needs service. he'll put away a half chance in the blink of an eye.
again, when he doesn't start it's for tactical reasons, about the way Fergie wants to set up the team, not because Hernandez isn't good for a start. i can understand this, not the 'supersub' tag.

Yes, he is lethal when he gets the chances. My point is we tend to create more 'poacher' chances later in games, when Hernandez can shine. As I've said before, we don't play the type of football to allow Hernandez to score bucket-loads starting games. Not enough of our play revolves around the ball in the box, which is where he is the most dangerous. Yes, he can play on the shoulder of the last defender, and I would definitely start him against the likes of Terry (or Mertesacker, for that matter) but then as you rightly say we're relying on the service getting to him.
Which doesn't always happen.
