Fresh in the wake of scandals involving Messi, Neymar and club president Bartomeu, FC Barcelona have been hit by another story involving some of its stars.
Today’s Catalan newspapers led with a story that brought equal shock and anger to the region – with news that many Barcelona players have been found to have paid their taxes, in full and on time. Though not all names were released, some that were mentioned included the likes of Gerard Pique, Rafinha and Claudio Bravo.
Not paying your taxes on time or fully has long been a tradition in Barcelona and this has translated into the club’s general financial affairs. The murkiness surrounding the deal to take Neymar to the club, which involved paying his father upwards of €50M, six goats, eleven sheep livers and a BEKO television for every day of the year provoked dismay around the world, but quite the opposite at the club itself.
Pique, Rafinha and Bravo were unavailable for comment on this matter and whether or not they will be willing to confirm or deny these nasty rumours remains to be seen. Although we did get a quote from a club insider on the paid taxes. “They have brought great shame to our club. This is not the Barca way,” they exclaimed.
