Not sure where to put this thread about Jimmy Greaves. Arguably one of England's great strikers of the 1960s is seriously ill in hospital. I have to confess hurling abuse at him when he was playing with the Spuds which he would laugh off. Later, he formed an unusual partnership with Ian St John, Scouse Saint, that became ITV's Saint and Greavsie. For its time it was quite good football television and their coverage tended to involve a lot of leg pulling and the like. He also battled alcohol abuse and was badly treated during his time playing in Italy. Jimmy had a severe stroke over the weekend and I think some of us from that generation who were 'entertained' by him might want to wish him well, as I do.

Growing up Saint and Greavsie was a staple diet for any football fan, great show and they worked great together. Never seen him play obviously as I'm a 40 year old young pup but my old man used to say he was fantastic. Sad day.

Sad news. I hope he pulls through. I tend to use Jimmy's well known phrase a lot by saying "As Jimmy Greaves would say, football is a funny old game". When you see former players like Gazza having drinking problems even nowadays and you read up on Jimmy, he was an alcoholic years ago but knocked that on the head and became Teetotalism. I remember him in the Saint & Greavsie show and it run from 1985-1992 on ITV. That show if shown nowadays with the two of them, would shite all over Lineker & Co on MOTD.

I read a quote from Denis Law that he thought Greavsie was the best striker he'd seen (in his day or of all time it didnt say)

Good to hear Jimmy Greaves is on the mend.
Harry Kane visited him in hospital.
"His speech is improving, he is dribbling less, and can almost string a sentence together," said Jimmy.
