Why is Messi such a protected creature in football? If the fouls on Valdivia had happened to Messi, there'd be two red cards already. Also Messi can be a dirty little fucker off the ball, but never seems to get hauled up for it. A few minutes before half time he ran into someone and shoved him out of the way - no foul given.
That said, this match has been played at a high tempo with players on the edge of control. Some serious, meaty tackles flying in, and some insane passing. Argentina's attack in first half stoppage time was mesmerizing.
Chile started strong, flying out of the traps, then Argentina slowed things down and dominated for about 20 minutes. If Chile can keep this energy up, they'll win. They've had the better chances. Ray Hudson said Chile is playing with three central midfielders in defense, and no actual centerback.
Argentina losing Di Maria took the impetus out of their attack. They're saying Di Maria ran like a "headless chicken" in the studio half time blather. That is how he gets injured all the time, sprints like a man with his hair on fire and then gets taken down, tears something.
And Gary Medel has been bossing midfield. He played for Cardiff and was their best player, but here he's looking reborn.

Di Maria's injury doesn't look serious, thank god.

Eduardo Vargas is in scintillating form. This is the same player who did nothing on loan for QPR? He's looking lethal here. Medel just kicked Messi in the stomach, LOL. Yes, same Vargas. But he could've put Chile ahead, Sanchez put him in front of the goal and he wasted the chance.

Di Maria's injury doesn't look serious, thank god. Di Maria feeling the back of his right thigh after his big run. I love hearing these studio nitwits saying what Di Maria should have done differently. Next they can advise Stephen Hawking on physics.

Chile has 3 players on yellows. Could be bad.
Vidal's price is going up up up. God how we need this guy in our side! 50th minute: 80 yard ball up to Vidal, brings it down like gently holding a kitten, and reverses a beautiful pass to a teammate. Tasty!
55th minute: now Rojo and Mascherano on yellows. Rojo left a knee in after the ball had gone, and Mascherano handled a cross.

Kryst. Vidal down with a knee injury in the 71st minute. Taken off in a golf cart. Right knee. VIDAL CAME BACK ON. Apparently not a bad one!
Messi has been anonymous in this second half. Argentina still have Higuain and Tevez on the bench, phraor. They need something different. Been reduced to launching long balls from defense to create something up top.
Sanchez has been roasting Rojo all match.
Auguero off, Higuain on. Validivia off, Fernandes on.
Both team's rhythm has vanished.
This referee has had an outstanding match. Excellent job. The ref!

The more I watch Vidal playing, the more I love him. He is visibly injured but he's still on the pitch as he promised a victory for the Chilean people.

Clear penalty on Rojo wtf Rojo did well to sell that one, but no penalty called on the Vidal take down earlier. This ref is letting the play go no matter...

On the replay I was under the impression he was hugged from behind. He was good at the entire competition, but today Isla explored his side of the field to create chances, especially on the 2nd half

True, but I think the ref saw that it was give and take on that free kick, no PK needed me thinks...
