This may not be over yet...not sure whether I care either way as long as we get Otamendi but telling a player who wants to leave that he is staying put isn't conducive to a happy camper (DDG could also be in this bracket)...so we have a player at each club who is (possibly) unhappy and wanting to move...seems an obvious solution to this...swap deal - not that these happen often but it is a possibility... For these players not to exchange clubs could be a risk for both clubs... In theory fine but there is a massive difference in the price we see Ramos at and the one they do. Agreed about the price discrepancy and I guess money may need to change hands but the principle is right... I just hate the idea of giving them a young DDG who is already top 5 in the world for an ageing (but still good) Ramos who will last maybe 3-4 seasons with us...yeah I know about the relative contract lengths but it still rankles...

not too far off what we are doing with DDG right now TJ. rightly so, the club is protecting it's asset, i fully expect us to do the same. Aye, agree with you on protecting the asset. But as a matter of course, I definitely think that in the grand scheme of things, Mr. Perez is most definitely a prick with ears That would be my personal opinion of course an based on my disappointment that we are not looking like we will have Sergio on the back line. I was 100% convinced he wanted to come to United, because this isn't about contracts any more, it is about his personal pride and also given that I think both he and his brother/agent think the same of Mr Perez that I do my view on this was he gets the prestige regardless of whether he stays or goes: he stays= he's captain, he goes = he's a demigod and instantly revered by the United faithful. so it came down to the unquantifiable loyalty/respect aspect, and the very measurable $$$$ aspect. if one of the latter two was good, i always thought he would err on staying put than moving. i was never expectant of this move, and more so i still hope for the younger, hard as nails Argentine with an equally impressive beard.

I think we just need to lock this fucker down and move on... I feel cheated and stupid that having gone this far, I started to believe it...as has been said, would probably rather Otamendi(#nojinx) anyway...

Well, at least Perez felt the burn on this one, cuz you know the player didn't resign for 4 years without getting "satisfied" with the terms of the contract

Am I the only one that thinks that this was a bit different? He actually wanted to leave, although reluctantly. Especially after what happened to Casillas?
I'm usually one to think that's it's just using us to get a better contract, but for some reason, I don't think this is the case.

i was never fully convinced (that it would happen or that he was the answer) but the thought got me giddy that we could take a player of such stature from madrid.
depending on what you believe that's been reported, it wasn't about money. it couldn't have been about the captaincy because they have no other candidates but him after casillas left. with those two points in mind, it was about money.

Real would not let him go after the backlash they got for Casillas. Refusing to sell would have forced him into a transfer request, or staying put until his contract runs out. I don't think he would have wanted to do either of those things, considering how he'd want his "relationship" with the fans to end.
So I think he had three options provided.
Ask to leave, and we'll work something out, depending on how much United are willing to pay. If United don't pay enough, you'll still be here, but you'll be the player that asked to leave. Stay and run your contract down, which will more or less result in the same backlash as the first option. Or sign a new contract and everyone will be (publicly) happy.

Perez with have his revenge on Ramos in a year or two. He wont have liked the gun to the head scenario within his perceived kingdom.

I think it was very different from the usual scenario, doesn't mean it didn't end the same way.
