| FOOTBALL NEWS03/09/2016 20:39, Report by James Tuck LUKE SHAW WITHDRAWS FROM ENGLAND SQUAD Luke Shaw has returned to Manchester United after withdrawing from England's squad, ahead of their trip to Slovakia for Sunday's World Cup qualifier.
The Reds left-back felt uncomfortable on Saturday morning and so sat out of training, after which it was decided he should go back to United. A statement on Saturday read: "The left-back was rested from training at St. George's Park this morning with the medical team continuing to manage his workload. "With Danny Rose set to start against Slovakia in Trnava tomorrow night, Shaw has been allowed to return to Manchester to train with his club as a precautionary measure. "Sam Allardyce's remaining 22 players all travelled out to Slovakia this afternoon." Allardyce later confirmed in a press conference that Shaw was not injured and had returned to Manchester "for precautionary measures". www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2016/Sep/manchester-united-defender-luke-shaw-withdraws-from-england-squad-to-face-slovakia.aspx

Luke Shaw will miss England’s World Cup qualifier against Slovakia and has returned to Manchester United after feeling ‘uncomfortable’ with the leg he broke almost 12 months ago. Shaw, 21, had been due to start Sunday’s Group F clash in Trnava on the bench with manager Sam Allardyce naming Tottenham defender Danny Rose in his starting XI at left-back. But after spending the week training with England at St George’s Park, Shaw, who has played every minute of United’s first-team games this season since returning from his broken leg lay-off, raised concerns over his leg before the squad departed for Slovakia on Saturday afternoon. “It's a slight problem with the leg,” Allardyce said. “I don't think it'll keep him out too long. “It’s a little ache, muscular, but he felt a little uncomfortable with it. “With what he's been through, we didn't want to take a chance – it's the calf where the break was. “I think he's done exceptionally well given the games he's played, but he didn't feel comfortable, so the wise thing to do was send him back to United. “He wasn't starting anyway. I'd be surprised if he wasn't okay for United's next game.” www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/slovakia-vs-england-luke-shaw-to-miss-match-after-feeling-uncomfortable-with-leg-he-broke-last-a7224381.html

Sensible choice, it's good that Smalling starts too, he needs the minutes

Laughable though that Stones and Cahill are picked above arguably the best defender in England last season.

I care little for England but Smalling isn't starting for United yet so makes sense. However I am delighted we have less chance of getting a lad injured this early in season.
Genuinely wish they did all euro friendlies and qualifiers over December or something so we are covered by the Jan window.
Failing that they didn't do so many fecking friendlies

Also need to say Big Sam was well cool about Shaw. A man who seems to understand injury recovery better than others

People will definitely have differing opinions on that topic. To me Smalling definitely can contend to being the best defender in England last season.
